movie critique: The Station Agent
57little known movie but a goody
A few weeks back I rented the movie The Station Agent from Netflix. This movie is a little independent film directed by Thomas McCarth and starring Peter Dinklage, Bobby Cannavale and Patricia Clarkson. It was released October 2003 to a limited amount of theaters but has gathered a small cult following.
The movie itself is about an introverted man that inherited an old train station from his only friend/business partner when he passes. He decides to take the property and make it his new residence. Once he arrives at his new home people just start to flock to him to become friends which takes him outside of his comfort zone. Lot of events happen to them that slowly bring them together.
Dinklage delivers a fantastic performance as the introspective Finbar that slowly blossoms out of shell. He took you on a journey that many people can relate to in a small way or completely. Also Cannavale is a riot as the upbeat Joe, who has the properties of the puppy that follows a little boy home. He cuddly but his is like the ever optimist in the middle of a tornado. Through Joe's guidance and will to ignore the body language that people don't want him to around he is the glue that keeps meshes the group together. It is no wonder why the movie has had over 40 total award nominations and 22 awards won. Some of the awards that were won include accolades from the Sundance Film Festival, Stockholm Film Festival, National Board of Review and others.
