The Stolen Generation...Modern youth lost its map

Old paganism buried in the tombs centuries before; surprisingly modern paganisam Surpass the later in essence of cruelty and revenge. The last red embers Of the sun set on a sorrowful generation .As Lord Gray of England said years back " light of the world were being put out ,they would not be lighted again in our generation". The resent episodes of massacres rejuvenate my feelings that the so called civilised cosmopolitan man sank into the abyss of barbarism and cannibeilism. Cannibals are savages they render primitive tools; but modern man equipped with higher education which taught to him that the man descended from ape and there is no hell and heaven; now act like a beast. There are many cruel and brutal murders in these days; all shows that our god's own country is no longer termed as gods but of devils. There are instance of torturing in the name of ragging, child abuse then came the murder of a young girl Sandra by her uncle's. Whole Kerala stunned to behold the gravity of cruelty and revenge by young twins to their brother's daughter .the murder of Sandra depicts how worse we can become! Imposing the extreme punishment to one and life imprisonment to other court considered the murder is rarest in the rare, cold blooded and diabolic. But TV telecasts reveal that the stricken fact that both of the convicts are relaxed, smiling and enthusiastic when judge pronounced the capital punishment. Notably, when court asked do you want to say something... they replied with a smile.....thanks! No human being at this age can accept death sentence with sheer enthusiasm and smile .both of them showing the same attitude. The way they set the trap is so brutal that only cannibals can ever do and we call them savage. Primitives and uneducated but what would we like to call this handsome, young, vibrant and dynamic twins? Primitive tribes used to send wild animals behind the prey when they flee, once caught they cut the body by swords. Same happened in our near by place in day light...

There are many reasons for this crisis but space limit will not allow me to dig deep in to the root cause, perhaps few notable features of our age will give an insight in to psychology of the people.

• 1) modern man is uprooted from the traditional ideas of morality

Walter Lippmann in his Preface to morals says "men cannot live according to traditional morality, the acids of modernity have eaten away traditional belief and we need a new ethics to suit our lives" once the principle of morality eliminated from common life then there is no sound basis to judge the act. The superstition of relativism .There is no distinction between right and wrong, truth and error; everything is depends upon point of view. All values are relative. When expedient moral conventions can be accepted; when a hindrance they can be rejected. There are no objective moral standared, hence no absolute distinction between good and evil. Even at Sandra's case Criminologist Mr Joseph comments "circumstance might prompted the massacre" everyone is his own judge. The notion that there is no absolute distinction between right and wrong stems in our colleges from the philosophy of pragmatism. This denies that God is absolute; it judges truth not by consistency but by utility and feelings. If there is no Right and wrong, there will be no good and bad, so heaven and hell will be folk tale. such soul reach to a point , where like Nietzhe ,they want to increase evil until all distinction between right and wrong is blotted out ;then they can sin with impunity and say with Nietzsche " Evil, be thou my Good" cruelty become justice and lust become love.

2) Consciousness of modern youth is dead

The twin culprit smiles at judge when the court pronounced verdict of death...that was a sarcastic smile, there was a wild feelings in their mind. Both of them lost the sensitivity as this young age. Killing of the consciousness takes place step by step. The voice of consciousness can be stilled in many ways but for our purpose I would like to mention two ways

• a) Denying the consciousness.

This rationalization of our evil ways, by which there is an adjustment of our consciousness to the way we live. By denying any absolute standard outside us, we can go on saving our face. Its a period of justification of our evil ways by denying the voice of inner heart, keeping the current philosophy it advocates that "in my college my professor told that we are not free .probably inherited the stealing from my grandparents or someone else. I too have an inferiority complex due to a repression of my ego when I was an infant and this is one of the way iam trying to compensate for it."

• b) Killing of consciousness

Nietzsche is an inspiration of those who kill conciousness.This philosopher frankly advocated sin, to the point where consciousness is completely lost and where there is no longer a distinction between good and evil. As an earlier poet put it:

Why should not conscience have vocation?

As well as other courts o'th'nation?

Have equal power to adjourn

Appoint appearance and return Samuel Butler Hudibras

Nietzsche urges what he calls a "transvaluation of values" which makes good evil and evil good. If such an abuse continued long enough, conscience can be killed. In this way we are feeling numbness or lack of sensitivity as those twin brothers felt, they would not notice it, until the last waking hours of life when it revives.

3) Modern education and academicians taught them an ideology which denies sin and guilt.

Modern educators say men will always do right if they are educated. What happened to the Nursing school girl??? Is it lack of education??? And here we touch the basic weakness of education, namely, that it assumes that sin is ignorance, and not abuse of freedom. Evil is attributed to want of enlightenment .The intellects make mistake but the will sins. And these educators says there is no sin so no need of having a guilt ...its only a complex. My friend Mr Shiju few months back told me that a notable person of our society advised the young Law student that there is no logic, there is no sin and there is no difference between right and wrong.

Dostoevsky, the Great Russian write of the 19^th century, was right when in a great flash of genius warned that the denial of sin and hell in education and religion would end in a world socialism where men would act like a wild and hungry beast. He picturised antichrist coming to the world and speaking to Christ

"Dost thou know that the ages will pass, and humanity will proclaim by the lips of their sages that there is no crime therefore no sin and guilt, and there is only hunger" I wonder if those days are not already here! The denial of guilt and sin is so common the modern education proudly proclaims men are free from these traditional taboos. Further he says" oh, we shall allow them even sin, they are weak and helpless, and they will love us like children because we allow them to sin. We allow them to sin because we love them. Most sad part is that this frightening spectacle is already taking place in our little land.

Fourthly modern man believes that there are no eternal verities like heaven or hell.

As mentioned earlier if there is no destiny there is no meaning in life. Life is limited with this world so whatever you do there is no need to carry away with guilt or remorse. Only survival if anything hinder th ego eliminate it without second thought As Macbeth Life will be a tale told by an idiot.

Fifth there is an estrangement from society, family and even from God.

Dr Prothima Murthy of NIMHANS once told that today youth lives in 3 different world friends, family and their secret world. Every teenager has a secret world and they are smart enough to hide them from everyone.Noone lit a candle there, only smokes and net. This world will be reveal only after a sudden crush. Most of the people surprised to see the convicts, so young, talented and dynamic...no one ever imagined that these boys can do a murder like this. The winds of change sweeps the shores .In olden days criminals look ugly except few like shobaraj but today's crime done by most handsome and talented chaps. Even in movies the image of villains changes from brutal to soft spoken, handsome generous gentleman! Because they have uprooted from family and from God.

Once separated from God they hate goodness even the presence of goodness will be a suffocating menance.This develop a s hatredness of self and near ones.

History does not prove that cosmopolitan man is progressing through his wireless web; instead of evolving from savagery to civilization we seem to be devolving from civilization to savagery .sad and tragic fact is that modern youth

Under sufficient stress and revenging spirit, and even amidst comfort spiced with lust, will do deeds of evil as terrible as any recorded in history. Barbarism is not behind us in time, but it beneath us .And it can emerge at any moment unless our wills aided by the grace of God, repress it. The modern superstition of mans infinite excellence and perfectibility without gods sustaining graces , forgets us that history is creating ever increasing possibility for chaos and brutal cannibalism in family order. Our modern mechanical ability to move quickly can go hand in hand with power to do more evil. Let no one deny it: our scientific progress has outstripped our moral progress .we are more comfortable people than our ancestors, but are we morally happier??? In the madness of specialization we have come to know more and more about the less and less; but in the meantime we have lost ourselves in the maze of numbers. Fed with huge numbers of undigested facts our reason has become hampered .what is the use of living unless we know the purpose of life. There are columnists in every weekly who advice the common man and youngsters ...commonly known as "open page" "Last word" or "columnist".BEWARE OF THEM who by destroying morals wreck morale.
