Job Stress - Drive A Divide
67
The statistics for stress in the work place in the US, is extremely high and getting higher. Nowadays with the economy the way it is, job stress is even higher, causing fatigue, depression, and feelings of insecurity.
The ultimate cure for job stress would be to have a job that doesn't cause stress, is simple and easy to live with. But for most people this is simply not an option. Instead, people with high stress positions in the work force need to create a divide between themselves and stress, and create a personal atmosphere at work that supports the working of this divide.
I always find it interesting how people in stressful professions, that work a lot of hours and give so much of themselves, rarely reach out to help themselves with stress relief at work. They will admit how stressed they are and can tell you exactly why, they read about how to help themselves but when it comes to putting that knowledge into action they simply don't bother. Why? Simple, they are so consumed with the stress, that they feel overwhelmed and only have enough in them to get through the day. Any other actions, even those that will help them, seem to much to deal with and they go by the way side. And then there are those who don't really believe that stress reducers work because the worker feels he doesn't get instant relief.
Stress reducers work when they are consistently utilized. The reason you don't notice such a huge difference when your first start is because the level of stress is still so high it is hard to recognize the effects the reducers are having. The key is to be consistent in your approach to stress relief. Choose your preferred form of stress reducers, preferrably ones that suit your personality and schedule, and create a daily routine. Adhere to this routine just as you do your exercise routine. Consider tacking on a stress reducing activity at the end of your exercise regime to help you save time. Drive a Divide Between You and Job Stress.
1. Start your day off right. You can help eliminate the negative effects of job stress before you even arrive at work by having a positive, healthy start to your day. This makes a massive difference in the way you handle the rest of the day and whatever stress that day holds. Experiment with these techniques til you find one that best suits you and your schedule.
- Wake up in enough time so you don't have to rush through your morning. Rushing in the morning is a very poor and stressful start to the day, simply because you are running late and become further annoyed in other areas such as driving. It usually means that you have an unhealthy breakfast or skip breakfast all together, and your breathing becomes increased, causing tiredness at the start of the day. You need time in the morning to move at a normal pace, and NOT just go through the motions of your morning preparations, like a robot without a brain.
- Music therapy. Play music as you get ready for work. Relaxed or up beat is up to you. Music has intense value when it comes to relaxation, as it reduces stress and can lift your mood.
- The Shower Stretch. Hot water in the shower will loosen your muscles, all you have to do is take a minute to relax in the shower instead of rushing through it. Stretch and breath as you feel the hot water relaxing your muscles.
- A healthy breakfast. Your need to balance your blood sugar levels in order to gain the sustenance your body needs to handle physical and mental stress. With a healthy breakfast you will be more resilient physically and mentally. Fruit and protein should be a part of your healthy breakfast - not just a cup of coffee or tea. Add a fruit bowl with your bagel or a fortified cereal.
- A cup of green. Have a cup of Green Tea in the morning. Full of antioxidants and great flavor, Green Tea is soothing and will nurture your body for the day ahead.
Other stress reducers include: walking, yoga, meditation (highly recommended for mornings), and journaling. Journaling is a very effective stress reducer but also has other important qualities: self awareness, focus, process of negative energy, and problem solving.
2. Stay clear of conflict. Conflict amongst co-workers causes physical and emotional stress and makes it uncomfortable to go to work because there is no way to escape the discomfort. To keep job stress at bay reframe from gossip, personal political or religious opinions and office antics that cause annoyance to other employees. Be the person that tries to keep the peace and doesn't get involved in the affairs of others.
3. Clear Job requirements. Much of job stress and burnout is due to blurred job requirements or constant turn over of job requirements. If you are in a position like this, speak to your boss and work together to get things sorted.
4. Comfortize your workspace. Posture and positioning is especially important if you have a desk job, or use a computer. Make sure your chair is aimed at the correct position so that your posture is correct when you are working. Otherwise you will find yourself with a soar back, shoulders and arms, which in turn will add to your stress and anxiety.
5. Be Organized. Be organized by planning ahead, not allowing yourself to be late and rushing to or from work, meetings, etc. Being organized also means your workspace should be free of clutter, which has negative aspects to it. Being organized also means being more efficient with your work.
6. Say "No" to multi tasking. Multi-tasking has a frazzled effect on a person and although once very popular and preferred by employers, nowadays it is not as widely used or praised due to the stress it causes from trying to do too many things at one time. If you want to maximize your time try the new strategy of chunking.
Ergonomize your work space
Mood, moral, energy level, and productivity are highly effected by your surrounding environment. Factors such as lighting, color, sound, and temperature can directly impact how you work and the way you feel while working. Get comfortable and decrease the onset of stress by applying these ergonomic practices to your work space.
- Have a plant on your desk and anywhere else possible around the office.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day, to help avoid headaches and stay alert.
- If you work on a computer place a crystal quartz on your desk to absorb electro-magnetic radiation.
- Start your morning at work clutter free by tidying up your desk before you leave, the night before.
- If you work on a computer be sure to use a modern LCD monitor and rest your eyes regularly throughout the day.
- Stretch several times throughout the day. Stand up, raise your hands overhead and lock your fingers, take a deep breath in and stretch for 15-20 seconds.
- Take a walk at lunchtime to stretch your legs and get some movement and energy flowing through your veins and muscles.
Job stress can have a massive impact on a persons personal life, family life and self esteem. It lowers the immune system and weakens organs thus making a person more prone to illness and disease. It also alters our emotional state to a negative one causing others to not want to be around us, or dislike us and everything seems twice as hard and seems to take twice the energy. There are many wonderful and powerful ways to reduce stress and help avoid anxiety and fatigue. Take advantage of these many ways, utilize them in all areas of your life, and drive a divide between your and job stress.
