The Style of Princess Leia

So perhaps Star Wars isn't the first movie that comes to mind when you think of the word "style". But there's definitely style to be found in the Star Wars Galaxy.

From Princess Leia's slave bikini (settle down, boys) to her understated ceremonial gown, there's been quite a lot of work that's went into the Star Wars Universe over the years.

Princess Leia: The Definitive White Gown

More than likely, this white gown is the one that comes to mind when we first hear the name, "Princess Leia."

When we first see Leia, she's aboard an Imperial Star Destroyer and is frantically trying to record a message for Obi Wan Kenobi via the droid, R2D2. This is when we first see Leia's gown in full. Simplistic, white with a silver belt and loose hood, the gown gives Leia the appearance of an innocent Princess caught in the evil clutches of the Empire.

No Underwear in Space

According to Carrie Fisher, Princess Leia wasn't allowed to wear a bra because, as the director, George Lucas, put it, there "wasn't any underwear in space."

Well, that's one way to put La Perla out of business.

Princess Leia's Ceremonial Gown

In the finale of Star Wars: A New Hope, Princess Leia is seen in a white ceremonial gown as she bestows medals of honor to Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Chewbacca.

The gown is just a little bit more grown up and a little more sexy than the gown from before. With a lower neckline, Leia is able to do away with the bun hairdo and opt for a more subtle hairstyle.

Princess Leia's Hoth Outfit

Princess Leia's Hoth outfit is all business. It's designed to keep her warm in the sub-zero temperatures of Hoth and allow her freedom to blast Imperial Stormtroopers when need be.

Like Leia's previous outfits, it's all white, but this probably has more to do with camouflaging her in the snow than anything else.

Princess Leia's Cloud City Outfit

Princess Leia's Cloud City Outfit

Princess Leia's Cloud City is an odd one. With a long vest over a red jumpsuit, it is perhaps one of Leia's most understated outfits.

The Cloud City costume is one that looks more like a citizen trying to blend in with the locals than a princess that is take charge like Leia which makes it somewhat unique within the line-up of Leia's wardrobe.

The Infamous Slave Bikini

While the white gown from A New Hope might be Leia's signature outfit, perhaps the most infamous is the bikini she wore in Jabba's Throne Room in Return of the Jedi.

Made of metal with a slender sash of fabric attached to the waist, Leia's metal bikini is the very definition of brevity.

Since its appearance in Return of the Jedi, the bikini has become the focus of many a geek fantasy and has been referenced in various television series and movies.

3 of Leia's outfits from Return of the Jedi are missing from this list; as is the outfit she is wearing at the end of The Empire Strikes Back.
