Dancing Styles

As a dance enthusiast, I believe it's a great medium of showing one's creativity, and having great fun at the same time. Through dance, the benefit of getting great physical activity is just one bonus. You increase your flexibility, your energy is able to withstand harder work, and Im certain you'll shed pounds as long as you enthusiastically dance.

There are many various dances that one can try to get in. Ranging from classical dancing to modern fusion dancing, there is a style for everyone.

Urban: Urban dancing otherwise known as hip hop dancing is a modern, upbeat, and very fun dance. Urban dancing can be found regularly on MTV, in a lot of popular music videos. For example, Chris Brown's music video "Wall to Wall" has many urban dancing sequences.

Ballet: Ballet is considered the root of all dancing. It teaches dancers flexibility, control of the muscles, and how to properly move one's body without straining a muscle. In fact, urban dance teachers recommend a basic class of ballet before taking theirs. Ballet is graceful, and requires a keen sense of balance. It may look easy, but that is because the dancers are experienced, able to perfectly balance themselves on their toes.

Jazz: Jazz can be considered a level above ballet. It focuses on even more flexibility, and slower movements requiring more muscle strength. Originating from african roots, it has upbeat dances, requiring precise movement. Jazz is also known for improvisation, making it a very emotional dance.

Shag: The Shag is a 1920's swing dance. It's a bluesy type of dance that requires fancy and erratic leg movements while the upperbody is completely unmoving. I had a friend who did this in the 5th grade and she had alot of fun.

Tap: Tap is akin to the shag, where the upper body stays still, while the legs do fancy moves, and stamping. Tap is a conjunction of music, and the tapping sounds of one's shoe. The shoe has metal bumps on the bottom that clack when stomped on.
