The Things You Should Know About Interest Charges
53The IRS considers taxes you haven't settled to be borrowed. The IRS is required by the U.S. Congress to charge interest on your unpaid taxes. You will not just be charged penalties for paying your taxes late, but you'll also be charged interest on the unpaid amount. By not paying your taxes or paying your taxes late, you've given yourself IRS problems.
You'll know you're being punished by the IRS through the interest and penalties on your late/unpaid taxes. Furthermore, it doesn't take long for the tax bill to double or triple up. It's because interest is computed against the entire figure, commencing on the date the tax was due, and penalties are assessed and compounded every day.
It doesn't matter why you have late/unpaid taxes because you will still be charged interest. Even if you make a mathematical error on your tax return, interest will accumulate for the amount of taxes unpaid. This interest will not stop until the IRS receives full payment. The interest is compounded every day and is posted every three months. It can go from 4-10% per year.
A detailed interest and penalty printout is available when requested. It'll reflect: 1)interest computations and lists of all tax penalties; 2) penalties assessed, interest rates, dates, and credits for refunds or payments; 3) penalty charges and interest on tax amounts; 4) applicable penalties; 5) account summary with balance due, showing up-to-date interest and penalty amounts.
Interest may be lessened or eliminated if you are eligible for an Offer in Compromise. Due to IRS delays or if applied in error can only be instances when interest is abated or cancelled. Our office can help you determine if the penalties and interest charged to you are correct.
