The Twitter phenomenon
100What is it about twitter that everybody seems to be talking about it? Some say it is the coolest social networking site, others think that it is for boring people who have nothing to do but “tweet” all day. Either way, everyone is talking about it so I had to join in and see what was it all about.
I joined Twitter about 3 months ago; if you want to follow me on Twitter, just click here. So far I have been following about one hundred people and I am followed by around 70 people who apparently claim to be interested in knowing what I am doing. But, has Twitter worked for me? Let’s say that in 3 months I have done about 500+ “tweets” from which I have gained 220+ views coming back to my directed links. I don’t call that a success, but then, I am still very new to Twitter and I feel that I need to find out more about it before I give up.
What is twitter?
- Twitter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Why Twitter
So, according to what I have read, Twitter can be used as:
- An Information network.
- A micro blogging platform.
- A social networking site.
So far I have been only using it as a social networking site.

Why do people Tweet?
Apart from the obvious marketing reasons, people Tweet in a constant update of finding their identity. People want to let you know who they are, what they are doing, where they are. It is a case of “I Tweet, therefore I am”.
Why do people like Twitter?
- It’s fast.
- It’s open.
- It’s easy.
Twitter's "suggested users"
- Twitter's 'suggested users'
Some high-profile Twitter accounts have been seeing astronomical jumps in the number of users subscribing to their profile updates -tens of thousands of new followers, in some cases. A feature launched last month, called "suggested users," contribute
What does it mean to follow someone on Twitter?
Following someone means receiving their Twitter updates. When you follow someone, every time they post a new message, it appears in your Twitter home page so you are getting updates in real time.
Who should you follow on Twitter?
Apart from your friends, family and people you are really interested in knowing about; you can follow virtually anyone you want. From co-workers to politicians, movie stars to other high profile personalities.
One of the features Twitter has created to start new people who sign up for their service is a suggested users page. As part of the sign-up process, new users are now shown a sort of featured personalities list that includes a wide variety of popular people and companies. Included are U.K. newspaper The Guardian's technology page, Web personality Felicia Day, TechCrunch, computer maker Dell, grocer Whole Foods, the New York Times and CNN.
Thanks to the Suggested users page some Twitter users like The Guardian have experienced a windfall going from about 4,000 followers to 66,000 in about a month.
Find Celebrities on Twitter
Celebrities who love Twitter
Celebrities love Twitter, perhaps because they are the most narcissistic of the lot. They need to be recognized to be celebrities. The people Tweeting just want to be in the forefront of your mind.
Aparently, one of the most famous celebrities in Twitter is MC Hammer one of the most obsessive Twitterers who claims to send updates every hour.
Jane Notar takes a peek into the tweets of Hollywood's elite in the Famous Celebrity Twitter Update.

The Twitter debate
Despite its avid followers and those who think that Twitter is the home for vain superficial people with nothing to say, the debate about Twitter is furious. Sometimes Twitter can be boring and trivial, while others it can very exciting and even scary. For instance, when terrorists attacked the Oberoi hotel in Mumbai on November 2008, several of the people trapped inside were describing the situation to the outside world via Twitter. The people trapped in there were the first ones to report the facts from the inside before any journalist or major news channel had any access to the information. Most of the time however, Twitter is filled with trivial messages like “going to bed”, “eating a hotdog”, “away to do the dishes” or even more bizarre messages such as “blue sky” or “thinking”.

Hubbers on Twitter
- The Hubbers On Twitter Directory
The inspiration behind this hub was a thread on the hubpages forum, where many hubbers started sharing Twitter addresses and signing up for each others accounts. I thought that it may be a good idea to start...

Ask a Question
Are you on Twitter? What are you expecting to get out of it?
I am still wondering whether it is of any use to stay in Twitter or not. I'll need to go and read that lens on Heather S. Brian.
Great Hub! I say go on with your life and wonder how you are getting by without using your twitter...
I think I will notice NO difference at all bloodnlatex.
Tweet my artsylvia! I call it my 'claim to fame neon sign' in the sky! I follow a bunch of important people i like, and i'm followed by awesome folks, some unexpected celebs from a broad spectrum. Great hub here!
Thank you IslandVoice, glad to her that Twitter works for you.
Thanks so much for writing this hub, Anath. Well written, informative, just what I've been looking for. Great job! As soon as I remember all my whatever-I-need-to-know stuff I'll follow you. I do have a twitter account somewhere in cyberspace!
i am on Twitter too, but I do not use it very often.
Great Hub, I just don't understand Twitter. I hear my friends or associates who have it and they read updates of people they are following that say "taking the elevator" "eating cereal".....and I think Why is that relevant? I guess I haven't seen the proof that it enhances my life, growth or knowledge on any level so haven't felt compelled to join. However, do note this is coming from someone who joined Facebook maybe a year after the rest of the world...;)
I'm on Twitter and feel that I'm just flailing around. My account is very new, but haven't seen any real traffic increases. Also I follow a few archaeology magazines and spend too much time reading articles!
I am on Twitter but can't realy give a good reason. I tweet most of the hubs I have written.
Robert Ballard
ive just signed up for the follow.ers group and it has given me them but i just get the feeling that the promised commissions wont happen, i could be wrong but i got a feeling its a bit of a con!! let me kmow what you think guys

Thank you Carmen for stopping to read.
I think there are lots of people with inactive accounts Princessa.
I know what you mean dejajolie, I felt I had to join in to see what was it all about because everyone was talking about it!
You've seen my numbers, CMHypno, I don't think I am getting to many views from it neither :(
That is what I use my Twitter for Putz Ballard. I cannot think that people that I don't know might be remotely interested in knowing what I am eating or wearing!
Let us know how it goes webwizzad. Good luck with it :)
Great hub info. I am new to the world of social media and blogging. I am still navigating through the seeming complex
programming of cyber world. Your hub throw more light into my inquiry.
Very insightful work on twitter. Thanks for sharing it!
Great hub. I'm on Twitter but like Princessa, I'm not active there. I have only 9 (or is it 10) followers and sometimes I don't visit my account for several days. Regardless of my personal twitter experience, I think a lot of people like it because it's a 'refreshing' change from facebook / networking sites and it's basically easy to do (no worries about grammar or spelling I think). =)
I use twitter too (AnamikaS) and tweet all my articles as and when i write them. But i would not say that it brings floods of traffic to my articles. But then i guess like little drops of water making the ocean smaller amounts of traffic from different sites definitely do add up.
I used to hate twitter but im completely hooked. Twitter does really well also because its mobile. Wiht almost any cell you can post instantly. Very very accesible.
Great artible by the way.
great to hear that hybridway. i am failrly new as well and I find the topic fascinating.
Thank you for reading it Jackson.
Being easy to use seems to be one of the best points of twitter emievil. I just keep wondering about its effectiveness... Maybe it only works really well for those who use it in a regular basis?
I guess you are right Anamika, every "little drop" helps regarding views!
I am not yet in a love/hate "relationship" with Twitter sasuke7s8s. Let's say I am in the start of a relationship wondering whether I should carry on or leave it. Thanks for the thumbs up!
Seems like very mixed reviews on the Twitter experience, but a terrific hub. Everyone I know tweets, haven't taken the plunge yet myself. I really wonder about advertising, does it really bring in business? Somehow I can't see actually checking out a company/business/individual that sent out a tweet, but maybe I just don't understand enough.
Personally for good traffic Twitter is useless but I still like it, I prefer to ping my hubs on www.pingomatic.com and I also use Digg, nice hub as ever my friend !
I hate to admit it but I have found Twitter a bit confusing and I'm glad you put it into the proper perspective. I think it would be more fun on a mobile device, but I down graded my cell phone because I prefer using my Netbook.
Very interesting hub!
Don't forget the Twitterarty: the cellebs who have thousands of worshiping deciples all waiting on that Tweet to tell you: "I just got into Francines because I am on the guest list." Which is no concellation for those lower down the Twitter Food Chain who are still outside Francines waiting in line in the rain.
Sure Twitter will bring about freedom in Iran, but it makes slaves of the free: are you still waiting for Steven Fry to tweet his bowel movements to his million contacts?
Francine: Too sweet to Tweet :-)
No doubt Twitter has taken the world by storm.
Twitter is awesone, great for personal use, as well as promotion. Great hub!
You know, I read this before, and I use twitter, but I don't know why! :/
I have an account and have used it twice. I don't even remember my password. I think it may benefit some business people but the craze to have as many followers as possible seems very trivial to me. And I have no interest in following celebrities. tweet, tweet. :)
I tried keeping a tweeter.
I didn't remember my password or find myself eager to follow someone and follow them around.
I didn't keep up to date with my posts and couldn't find things I liked or my friends.
Basically, let's just say I'm an individual who is not in favor of tweeting any time around now.
(Facebook is the best!
It keeps you organized, shows you who's real, and you can do anything there! From tagging to flairs to quizzes and updates and wall posts)
I think Twitter's cool, but sometimes I feel bored too. I use it on and off, to add on friends using Hubpages if I can, and to put up my Hub links. Other than that, I just read others' tweets and open up links..
i wonder why i prefer facebook to twitter
Although admittedly a member of Twitter, I must admit, I do find it rather pointless as all you are able to do is write a short line about what you are doing. Other social networking websites have alot more to do on them and are far more entertaining.
I love Twitter. Listeners network with CNRG radio through Twitter all day!
I love Twitter. It connects you to the decision makers in the online world
the best twitter account to follow is http://twitter.com/shitmydadsays. hands down some of the funniest non-scripted material out there
i dont get twitter ,
I use twitter to learn- and to get my info out- I got great advice on a homework project for my daughter- she got an A-
I was not curious about twitter until I read this. Anyway I like this hub.
I use twitter to gain information, especially on ways to handle my two children's food allergies and new treatment techniques that might be out there to help my patients. I also post links to articles I have written, but like some of the others only have small traffic from this.
This was an inspiring hub and I responded with another hub: Why Twitter is Special http://hubpages.com/hubtool/edit/903692
Tweet yourself to the top
Twitter and Facebook traffic are down at the moment I read... Twitter has so much annoying spam and is completely USELESS unless you use something like Tweetdeck if you want to actually get anything out of it.
Thomas
I also feel that twitter was written for those without a life.
Good hub. I use twitter to follow celebrities and businesses I am interested in keeping up with. New songs or movies starring your favorites, they show up on twitter. It is an immediate source of info. Then I don't have to surf the net for info. Twitter gives new info quickly. Everyone tries to be the first to highlight something. I don't really correspond with anyone on there. Most of the people on twitter with any real amount of followers seem to be celebrities such as Ellen. Just pick who you want to follow and ignore all the spammy junk. You can block anyone you want and don't have to accept followers. Not many of my friends like it at all. If you are into certain celebs, this is a quick, easy newsworthy source.
Wow, thanks everyone for all your comments and opinions on Twitter. It really helps to read your experiences and discover that I am not alone being puzzled about it.
Thanks for the www.pingomatic.com tip HealthTip, I'll ckeck it out.
It seems that the Twitter phenomenon had started to die down, after many month of traffic surge, according to 'Compete" data, it seems that the traffic for Twitter had flatten for the month of Sep.
Twitter is ok, but I think many people misuse it, or have no use for it in the first place...maybe I am just getting old :)
i hate twitter. I really do.
I think that despite the data, it is yet to early to say what is going to happen with Twitter liuwenhua.
I hink you are right thaninja, there has been to many people writing nonsense in Twitter and that is why it is boring. After all who wants to know what you are eating or when are you going for a shower? Probably if correctly used Twitter would have more followers.
Thanks for sharing your feelings onewaythinky!

thanks for sharing your strong opinion on Twitter Grey Wolf.
great hub i liked the videos
Excellent! this is pretty much the basics of twitter.com
i am on twitter, and have been for some months now. check me out here: http://twitter.com/Duke35818
Twitter is ok its a good tool to add to your arsenal. But it is not the best way to market online, unless your Ashton kutcher or a well known business, or celebrity.
Thanks for your comment Investment school.
I'll check you out there Maira.
That sounds right jayorban.
great hub i liked the videos
I've been working on a Twitter hub of my own, it's full of information about how to use Twitter for business. Please let me know what you think!
good you enjoyed Tiffany.
Thanks for the link darntoothysam, I'll have a look.
Good knowledge about Twitter ....Great Job ...Twitter is a fun in which everyone can participate...its better to tweet yourself in a good manner.
I utilize T for business purposes and hope to gain followers that have an interest in what my company does.
I love twitter. I like to keep track of my favorite musicians like Taylor Swift, Nine Inch Nails, and Danny Lohner and what they're up to. Some of my favorite blogs like gamezig.com also use Twitter so I'm automatically updated when they add a new post. I use echofon for my iPhone and can check or update wherever I am!
I just dont like it, its easy as it sounds :D
thanks for the informative hub though.
I enjoyed twitter as you easily be able to get information about it
Looks like Twitter is the only one who can compete with Google if they play the cards correctly. Looks like they are not making much profit, maybe time to sell it to someone who can make use of it...
Interesting article. I had a Twitter account but deleted it from inactivity. I read somewhere that individuals only make up 15-20% of users and the rest are big companies. I found that surprising. While it may or may not be true it makes you wonder who really benefits.
Twitter is the coolest social networking site. I try to tweet as much as I can, but still feel I need to tweet more. The joy of Twitter is not just tweeting, but also to follow others and get followed. It is a like a popularity contest. Who can tweet the most, follow the most and have the most followers. Thanks.
Thank you everyone, it is fantastic to hear about your experiences and opinions about Twitter. I am sure it is useful for all of us who are still not very convinced about the benefits of tweeting.
i myself cant grasp the basics of twitter?
whats so good about it. all i ever read about is peoples boring days.
i dont think there are any benefits to twitter.
Most of the tweets seem to be like that ivorii, that is what puts me off Twitter. However, I am not giving up yet, I want to see how it goes.
Great resource..thank you!
Facebook and Twitter rule
I also use Facebook Pages to promote my business...i like them because they are indexed by search engines and highly customizable...you can add html, even an opt-in form to gather leads.
Here are 10 quick tips to promote your Facebook Pages http://hubpages.com/hub/10-Quick-Tips-to-Promote-y
Wow, very informative with plenty of places to bookmark for tweet info. Thanks! DOn't use it a lot, but want to see how it can help with biz growth.
So... is it working for you sutrapu?
Thanks for the link ActiveY.
Look like we are in the same boat 1AutomationWiz.
Anath, this article is great. I will share it on Twitter. Twitter is informative because you can read in short sentences what you might be interested in. Good for people who are short of time.
Thanks for the tweet Ellen :)
Great article. I kind of equate Twitter with a recycled instant messenger. Instead of talking to one or two people on your IM, you have a whole world to chat with. I have made a few awesome friends on twitter, but I do use it to post hubs, or new blog posts. A lot of posts are pretty empty, but you'll find a lot of good stuff on there as well.
We are ALL a-twitter - and I'm wondering if we ever get found....but it must be going somewhere! Great piece!
Informative article
Great article but I do not fall in the line of Nit-Twits, as I call them. If you tweet good for you, its just a fad, it is not going to last long. People tend to fall into what's popular, to fit in with the in crowd, Twitter is like Google, just because everyone is using it, it must be cool, I find that if we all just step out of the box and see what else there is around us, we all wouldn't be so focused on this nonsense. I tried Twitter, it got to be boring, I don't follow the bored and miserable. The internet has brainwashed our minds. That is just my opinion and I am entitled to that, one right we still have that isn't taxed or told we can't have.
Thank you crazybeanrider, I cannot say I've chat too much in Twitter. That is one of the reasons why I don't like it too much, I feel isolated a bit like talking to myself.
Thanks for commenting akirchner and Filipino girls :)
Of course you are entitled to your opinion sportykat66, in fact, the more controversial the better.
Thanks, Anath, for a very well written hub. You tell it like it is with great accuracy. I like how you got the point across that Twitter has important uses in spite of the fact that people use it for silly things. I feel bad that so many people misunderstand the power of Twitter, mainly because they see tweets like "I'm going to bed now" and "I'm waking up now." I don't see any point in that. But Twitter is also used for important tweets too, such as victims of terrorists getting news out to the world, as you mentioned in your hub, and other news being posted as it occurs. Also updates from business partners can be vital for business. As an example, I use Twitter to follow my web host provider. It is the first place they post news about any problems they are having. I also follow my book publisher. I get up-to-date information from them via Twitter about publishing news. And as for my own tweets, well, I am writing my second book and I was procrastinating for some time. I found more motivation to finish by having followers on Twitter watching over me. My idea was that if I have to answer to my followers, then I need to show progress. It's working for me at http://twitter.com/SelfHelpBook
A good hub with all needed information. The wide response this article has received also adds some useful experiences, Months ago one of my fellow hubbers sent me a message to join it.But i didn't pay attension to it as I am engeaged in 3-4 such sites and I have no time to spend on other sites.
I like the idea of twitter, I also have an account, but I find it quite boring.
cool hub page...i am using twitter a/c it's great website for social network..
backlinging your url is a great way to move up on google seach engines. Don't try to do any more than 5-7 sites a day. Take time to read the information, a leave a good comment. For more free online marketing tools . Go to http://www.onlinerecessionbuster.com ;
Jerome Nickerson
be careful what info you tweet~~ employers, thieves track all of this and frequently spam accounts.
Now I am following you too Glenn, so you better get working ;-)
I think there are too many sites and not enough time to pormote yourself in all of them prasadjain.
yes, it can be boring rascielll.
good you think so webrecsol.
thanks for the advice Jerome.
Very important consideration rebekah, thanks for the reminder.
I dont expect nothing to get out of this site.I only go on it for a couple of secs, then i log off.I dont see why many people like it.It's kinda boring. It's like why do you wanna see what people are doing all day.Its like the boring myspace or facebook l0l.Only time im on it is when im on ustream.tv thats when its amazing. =)
great hub
Great hub! Keep up the good work, I will be sure to follow closely. Cheers!
I have a Twitter account but I really do not use it much. If I want to post my thoughts, I will come now to Hubpages or Facebook where most of my friends have an account. Twitter is kind of boring to me and thus that is why I am rarely on. Another thing that annoys me with Twitter is the requests of people who want to follow that you do not know. Why would someone want to follow you based off your profile on Twitter. I do not get it so that is why I rarely use it at best.
Probably the best thing to do lalatheemodel.
thank you PhoenixV.
I know who will be following me now drcrischasse ;-)
Thanks for your input kingis.
This is a very interesting hub, Thanks!!
You are welcome Madison
I have not Tweet yet, but I will check it out. Like you said I don't think anyone care about what I am doing now beside some of my family members.
I think at the very list it is worth checking and trying Dao Hoa.
I am a twitterer but I have no followers. Where does that leave me?
On twitter too. Yes, like carolarandall said where does it leave you if you don't have any followers?
I have followers but get mad if I notice they stop following. I can't handle the rejection!
wow I find this very interesting, I like the youtube video as well. check out my blog http://heartfullofmusic.blogspot.com/
I signed up for twitter recently and im still debating whether I like it or not. I don't have a big following base yet, nor do I follow that many people, lol. I suppose the most useful thing about it would be clicks you get for redirection. We'll see :) Great post.
Loved the twitter hub, I am on twitter more to keep up with people than anything else.
I couldn't understand why people used such a trivial thing - but as an author, I was reminded in no uncertain terms that it was my duty - so I persevered.
I've now changed my mind - Once you get beyond telling everyone what you had for lunch it becomes fascinating.
If you want to take a peep at me on there my Twitter name is ajbarnett
Hi,
I have joined twitter some months before. It is not yeilding much in sense of traffic and business.
However, it provides lot of back links to improve search engine ranking.
Thanks and thumbs up!
Jyoti Kothari
Do you want any carolarandall? and, would you mind people who don't know you to follow or would you just accept as followers those who you know?
I have seen a couple of hubs here on how to get more followers on Twitter Askme, they might be helpful.
Please do not leave links irrelevant to the topic anapease93. You can leave a link to your Twitter but not to other sites please.
Thank you Laura, good luck with it!
A valid reason janiek13
Thanks for sharing your experience Anthony, I'll be following you ;-)
That is a good thing to know JYOTI, thanks for the info and of course for the thumbs up :)
I like the way your brain thinks, makes me feel alive listening to what your thinking, very cool...Keep it up ...PS Now I Know Why I bookmarked your page ;-) ...Hope you are doing well,
Just like this whole blogging malarky, I find that I probably just don't 'GET' the elements of Twitter which make it either profitable or do-able... but you live & learn as they say and seeing that so many others are also having a little trouble getting to grips with it all has inspired me to persist with the 'Twittering' for now... I think the problem that most of us hubbers are going to have with it is that we all like to use words... & lots of 'em! :D
Thanks for the informative hub. xx
I believe that micro-blogging is the hottest thing these days. People are just as intrigued as everyone else when it comes to knowing the latest about people they follow or know. It's the viral factor that keeps them tweeting. :)
John
I Really like the twitter as we don't have to write too much just 140 words. Express yourself simply is what twitter for. The concept of micro-blogging has been revolutionized by the twitter. I keep on tweeting regularly and is able to share my thoughts pretty easily with my friends. We friends even send messages through the twitter. I think twitter is going to rule in the coming future.
I've never been on twitter. But I think I will check it out after reading your article. Which by he way was very enlightening.:) I learned something new today - the attack on the hotel. Technology is amazing in that way!
Twitter can be a lot of fun. It's fast and easy. I pop in there now and then. :)
twitter has a lot of potential but I haven't been able to make myself use it consistently enough to see good return on my effort :P
twitter is a great sight according to people to gain viewers but I still do not know how to use it effectively for my sites.
I am doing really well Lee Thacker, Thanks.
I feel a bit that way loubeeloo, like if there is something I am missing and cannot see it!
Looks like it is your thing johntriggerman!
I supposse that in your context it makes sense to Tweet abentley. The problem is that I feel "lonely" tweeting. I have followers and I follow but we don't really interact.
I think it is worth checking out Suzie; who knows, it might work for you :)
Thanks for sharing Carmen.
I am still waiting pcdriverupdate.
You are not alone masmasika. Like I said at the start of these comments, I feel I am missing something...
I'm a twitter user too, but till now, I haven't found it very useful to me. Still have to learn more...
Yes I do have an account to Twitter. And it was great because, I was able to follow and get updated with my crush and all time idol, Kris Allen. There he updates from time to time and it is very overwhelming for me that he shares most of the things that he do everyday. Thanks twitter.
Twitter is great phenomena and souvenir of this century
I read so much about Twitter - I have yet to put into practice .It appears to require to much time - definitely useful for people with little else to do. Large followers - what's the point? You wont have time to interact with all of them. Like a fan club.
to each his own - happy tweting every one.
twitter is lame, who cares what your tweeting about
i have not seen a hub like this amazing
I've never tried twitter and I don't think I want to. I would not want people knowing my every move. Plus, I'm a busy mom, I don't have the time.
Yes it is kind of like talking to yourself. Then you are left hanging there for somebody to respond to your tweets. I am not a very good tweeter. It is a weird medium that's for sure.
Thanks everyone for sharing your opinions and experiences.
Twitter is great for following your favorite speakers with great content!it is a real great platform to distill and separate the meaningful content you are looking for.
glad it works for you globaltechsource.
I don't use twitter. The last thing I want to do is broadcast my every thought and action to the world, but I guess there are people who want to get their 15 minutes of fame any way they can. As for following others around, I can't think of a single person I'm that interested in and I find the whole business just a little bit creepy....
just ate a piece of cucumber
chewing
swallowed
ate another piece of cucumber
wow, isn't this exciting
Twitter is a huge waste of time for me. So much that I've stopped tweeting altogether!
Anath, thanks for this hub! Just recently got on twitter to check it out. I have already gotten some good tidbits of info from some marketers and other influencers I follow on twitter that I might have missed otherwise. Lots of spammers on there as well, but at least they're easy to block. Good Hub!
Thanks for your comments, it is great to "hear" from twitterers and non-twitterers

I am on Twitter but to be honest I don't pay it that much attention, its a case of there are only so many hours in a day. So for me I pop and have a look at whats happening occasionally but really don't spend too much time on it, I am sure there are great ways to use it though.
My claim to fame, Heather Small is following me on Twitter, I am guessing it is because I dedicated a lens to her on Squidoo and her UK tour with MPeople.
