What is it about twitter that everybody seems to be talking about it? Some say it is the coolest social networking site, others think that it is for boring people who have nothing to do but “tweet” all day. Either way, everyone is talking about it so I had to join in and see what was it all about.

I joined Twitter about 3 months ago; if you want to follow me on Twitter, just click here. So far I have been following about one hundred people and I am followed by around 70 people who apparently claim to be interested in knowing what I am doing. But, has Twitter worked for me? Let’s say that in 3 months I have done about 500+ “tweets” from which I have gained 220+ views coming back to my directed links. I don’t call that a success, but then, I am still very new to Twitter and I feel that I need to find out more about it before I give up.

Twitter in Plain English: A quick and plain English intro the micro-blogging service Twitter.

Why Twitter

So, according to what I have read, Twitter can be used as:

  • An Information network.
  • A micro blogging platform.
  • A social networking site.

So far I have been only using it as a social networking site.

Are you on Twitter?

Why do people Tweet?

Apart from the obvious marketing reasons, people Tweet in a constant update of finding their identity.  People want to let you know who they are, what they are doing, where they are.  It is a case of  “I Tweet, therefore I am”.

Why do people like Twitter?

  1. It’s fast.
  2. It’s open.
  3. It’s easy.

What does it mean to follow someone on Twitter?

Following someone means receiving their Twitter updates.   When you follow someone, every time they post a new message, it appears in your Twitter home page so you are getting updates in real time.

Who should you follow on Twitter?

Apart from your friends, family and people you are really interested in knowing about; you can follow virtually anyone you want.  From co-workers to politicians, movie stars to other high profile personalities.

One of the features Twitter has created to start new people who sign up for their service is a suggested users page.  As part of the sign-up process, new users are now shown a sort of featured personalities list that includes a wide variety of popular people and companies. Included are U.K. newspaper The Guardian's technology page, Web personality Felicia Day, TechCrunch, computer maker Dell, grocer Whole Foods, the New York Times and CNN.

Thanks to the Suggested users page some Twitter users like The Guardian have experienced a windfall going from about 4,000 followers to 66,000 in about a month.

Find Celebrities on Twitter

Celebrities who love Twitter

Celebrities love Twitter, perhaps because they are the most narcissistic of the lot. They need to be recognized to be celebrities. The people Tweeting just want to be in the forefront of your mind.

Aparently, one of the most famous celebrities in Twitter is MC Hammer one of the most obsessive Twitterers who claims to send updates every hour.

Jane Notar takes a peek into the tweets of Hollywood's elite in the Famous Celebrity Twitter Update.

The Twitter debate

Despite its avid followers and those who think that Twitter is the home for vain superficial people with nothing to say, the debate about Twitter is furious.  Sometimes Twitter can be boring and trivial, while others it can very exciting and even scary.  For instance, when terrorists attacked the Oberoi hotel in Mumbai on November 2008, several of the people trapped inside were describing the situation to the outside world via Twitter.   The people trapped in there were the first ones to report the facts from the inside before any journalist or major news channel had any access to the information.  Most of the time however, Twitter is filled with trivial messages like “going to bed”, “eating a hotdog”, “away to do the dishes” or even more bizarre messages such as “blue sky” or “thinking”.

I am on Twitter but to be honest I don't pay it that much attention, its a case of there are only so many hours in a day. So for me I pop and have a look at whats happening occasionally but really don't spend too much time on it, I am sure there are great ways to use it though.

My claim to fame, Heather Small is following me on Twitter, I am guessing it is because I dedicated a lens to her on Squidoo and her UK tour with MPeople.

Great Hub, I just don't understand Twitter. I hear my friends or associates who have it and they read updates of people they are following that say "taking the elevator" "eating cereal".....and I think Why is that relevant? I guess I haven't seen the proof that it enhances my life, growth or knowledge on any level so haven't felt compelled to join. However, do note this is coming from someone who joined Facebook maybe a year after the rest of the world...;)

Seems like very mixed reviews on the Twitter experience, but a terrific hub. Everyone I know tweets, haven't taken the plunge yet myself. Good hub. I use twitter to follow celebrities and businesses I am interested in keeping up with. New songs or movies starring your favorites, they show up on twitter. It is an immediate source of info. Then I don't have to surf the net for info. Twitter gives new info quickly. Everyone tries to be the first to highlight something. I don't really correspond with anyone on there. Most of the people on twitter with any real amount of followers seem to be celebrities such as Ellen. Just pick who you want to follow and ignore all the spammy junk. You can block anyone you want and don't have to accept followers. Not many of my friends like it at all. If you are into certain celebs, this is a quick, easy newsworthy source.

Great article but I do not fall in the line of Nit-Twits, as I call them. If you tweet good for you, its just a fad, it is not going to last long. People tend to fall into what's popular, to fit in with the in crowd, Twitter is like Google, just because everyone is using it, it must be cool, I find that if we all just step out of the box and see what else there is around us, we all wouldn't be so focused on this nonsense. I tried Twitter, it got to be boring, I don't follow the bored and miserable. The internet has brainwashed our minds. That is just my opinion and I am entitled to that, one right we still have that isn't taxed or told we can't have.

Thanks, Anath, for a very well written hub. You tell it like it is with great accuracy. I like how you got the point across that Twitter has important uses in spite of the fact that people use it for silly things. I feel bad that so many people misunderstand the power of Twitter, mainly because they see tweets like "I'm going to bed now" and "I'm waking up now." I don't see any point in that. But Twitter is also used for important tweets too, such as victims of terrorists getting news out to the world, as you mentioned in your hub, and other news being posted as it occurs. Also updates from business partners can be vital for business. As an example, I use Twitter to follow my web host provider. It is the first place they post news about any problems they are having. I also follow my book publisher. I get up-to-date information from them via Twitter about publishing news. And as for my own tweets, well, I am writing my second book and I was procrastinating for some time. I found more motivation to finish by having followers on Twitter watching over me. My idea was that if I have to answer to my followers, then I need to show progress. It's working for me at http://twitter.com/SelfHelpBook

Twitter is kind of boring to me and thus that is why I am rarely on. Another thing that annoys me with Twitter is the requests of people who want to follow that you do not know. On twitter too. Yes, like carolarandall said where does it leave you if you don't have any followers?

I have followers but get mad if I notice they stop following. I can't handle the rejection!

I signed up for twitter recently and im still debating whether I like it or not. I don't have a big following base yet, nor do I follow that many people, lol. I suppose the most useful thing about it would be clicks you get for redirection. We'll see :) Great post.

Loved the twitter hub, I am on twitter more to keep up with people than anything else.

I couldn't understand why people used such a trivial thing - but as an author, I was reminded in no uncertain terms that it was my duty - so I persevered.

I've now changed my mind - Once you get beyond telling everyone what you had for lunch it becomes fascinating.

If you want to take a peep at me on there my Twitter name is ajbarnett

Hi,

I have joined twitter some months before. It is not yeilding much in sense of traffic and business.

However, it provides lot of back links to improve search engine ranking.

Thanks and thumbs up!

Do you want any carolarandall? and, would you mind people who don't know you to follow or would you just accept as followers those who you know?

I have seen a couple of hubs here on how to get more followers on Twitter Askme, they might be helpful.

Please do not leave links irrelevant to the topic anapease93. You can leave a link to your Twitter but not to other sites please.

Thank you Laura, good luck with it!

A valid reason janiek13

Thanks for sharing your experience Anthony, I'll be following you ;-)

That is a good thing to know JYOTI, thanks for the info and of course for the thumbs up :)

Just like this whole blogging malarky, I find that I probably just don't 'GET' the elements of Twitter which make it either profitable or do-able... but you live & learn as they say and seeing that so many others are also having a little trouble getting to grips with it all has inspired me to persist with the 'Twittering' for now... I think the problem that most of us hubbers are going to have with it is that we all like to use words... & lots of 'em! :D

Thanks for the informative hub. xx

I believe that micro-blogging is the hottest thing these days. People are just as intrigued as everyone else when it comes to knowing the latest about people they follow or know. It's the viral factor that keeps them tweeting. :)

I Really like the twitter as we don't have to write too much just 140 words. Express yourself simply is what twitter for. The concept of micro-blogging has been revolutionized by the twitter. I keep on tweeting regularly and is able to share my thoughts pretty easily with my friends. We friends even send messages through the twitter. I think twitter is going to rule in the coming future.

I supposse that in your context it makes sense to Tweet abentley. The problem is that I feel "lonely" tweeting. I have followers and I follow but we don't really interact.

I think it is worth checking out Suzie; who knows, it might work for you :)

Thanks for sharing Carmen.

Yes I do have an account to Twitter. And it was great because, I was able to follow and get updated with my crush and all time idol, Kris Allen. There he updates from time to time and it is very overwhelming for me that he shares most of the things that he do everyday. Thanks twitter.

I read so much about Twitter - I have yet to put into practice .It appears to require to much time - definitely useful for people with little else to do. Large followers - what's the point? You wont have time to interact with all of them. Like a fan club.

to each his own - happy tweting every one.

Yes it is kind of like talking to yourself. Then you are left hanging there for somebody to respond to your tweets. I am not a very good tweeter. It is a weird medium that's for sure.

I don't use twitter. The last thing I want to do is broadcast my every thought and action to the world, but I guess there are people who want to get their 15 minutes of fame any way they can. As for following others around, I can't think of a single person I'm that interested in and I find the whole business just a little bit creepy....

Anath, thanks for this hub! Just recently got on twitter to check it out. Lots of spammers on there as well, but at least they're easy to block. Good Hub!
