In an extremely "funtertaining" way, DreamWorks Animation gave us a crash course in just how vital pollination is to our entire ecosystem in their animated film; Bee Movie.

In keeping with it's title, the hero of the movie turned out to be - you guessed right - a honeybee.

While watching the movie for the umpteenth time the other day, my four year old ask me; "Mommy, are bees the only insects that pollinate flowers?"

Honestly I was stumped. I tried my very best to reach back (way back) into the recess of my mind, to dig up what I had been taught about pollination in like what - the fourth grade?

So of course, like the inquisitive woman that I am, I immediately set out to discover the unsung heroes of pollination and give them their just due.

* Those Unsung Heroes Of Pollination.

1.) Flies - if you're a chocolate lover, thank the often labeled "pesky" fly, since it's a tiny specific species (forcipomyia midges) that pollinates the flowers of the cacao tree.

2.) Bats - scary as they may seem, bats are responsible for pollinating the baobab and kapok tree (these majestic trees are actually dependent on bats during the pollination process). In addition to feeding on the nectar, they also eat the fruit and disperse the seeds as well.

3.) Possums - Just the thought of a possum makes me cringe. However, they perform an important job. In Australia, this small marsupial visit flowers to feast on their nectar. During the feeding process, their furry little bodies transports pollen from flower to flower.

4.) Sun-birds and Hummingbirds - While these beautiful birds are flitting from flower to flower, pollen gets stuck to the feathers of their foreheads and breast, and are redeposited.

5.) Butterflies and Moths - Since these insects depend largely on nectar as a food source, they pick up pollen as they fly from flower to flower. Some orchids depend solely on moths for successful pollination.

6.) Beetles and Wasps should also receive honorable mention.

Although it's common knowledge that honeybees are the world's most important and popular pollinator, we can't forget about those little known, unsung heroes of the pollination world.
