Shared space in architecture is essentially designing public spaces so that the negative effects of the traffic are managed so there is more of a sense of community and mutual respect for others. Making a community more efficient as well as modern can also be energy efficient encouraging pedestrian and alternative traffic. In the consideration of use of space the motion of traffic is analyzed and issues such as safety, congestion, economic vitality and community severance are utilized and managed so that the community and streets are incorporated to allow for harmonious interaction with humans. Often street signs are eliminated to allow motorists to act responsibly when driving in the community because the lack of warnings in signage gives a sense of urgency to the driver and can cause improved caution.
The theory isn't much different than small towns and villages. In this situation, the traffic has to slow down. As an added bonus, there are often nice old buildings to admire and brick cobblestone in the town square area. The trick is to integrate this idea into the larger city areas and increase the number of shared space areas.
The theory of shared space design also can be applied in other ways to include the way we may design open areas in an office building or mall. The idea is to share community space in such a way that others can benefit from the usage and share resources. It is also possible to share office space areas and shop areas with attention to spatial design and efficiency.
