The voice- part 1
From the time we are born, there is a continuous din that hits and assails our senses- (Vijay Eashwaran). There is this voice in our heads that speaks to us. It is the constant chatter of the mind, the constant meaningless chatter of the mind.
This voice is one that constantly points out our limitations to us. It is one that keeps us from doing things we want to be doing. For example- have you ever made a resolution to start getting up early so you can go jogging? You announce it to all your friends. The big day arrives. You do wake up early and enthusiastically and set out for that jog. You may manage to do this for a couple of days, but come day3 or day 4, you hear the alarm go off. You groan. You body is hurting from the jogging you have just about started. You wonder ‘do I really have to go jogging, what possessed me to do it?’ and that voice in your head says- it’s ok if you don’t go today. Just lie in. Take a break. You can always go tomorrow’ and so without further argument, you roll over and go back to sleep.
It is the job of this voice to keep you in your comfort zone, to ensure you never do anything to cause yourself to grow and evolve as a person. It is this voice that tells you things like- you are too fat, or too thin, that you are so sad and pathetic, or you are so unattractive, or that you are doomed to fail, or remain sad and single for the rest of your life. It is this voice that tells you don’t even try it; you’ll never be able to do it. It tells you that you don’t deserve to be rich or out of debt. It is the job of this voice to keep you in discomfort. That is how it has been programmed.
It is when you ignore the voice and decide to do something in spite of what it is telling you that you will grow and evolve as a person. This voice is so insidious, that it will tempt you to give up whatever new activity you have started to do, that will take you out of your ‘normal’ circumstances. So it will do its best and catch you unawares. It always tells you it’s too much of a pain to change.
If we have to live with this voice, it is after all your constant companion, why not get it to say good things, things that you’d like to hear, things that will motivate and inspire you? And it can be done. You can re-program that voice. It needs a lot of effort, but you CAN do it. This voice is but a reflection of your beliefs. If you get around to changing your beliefs, you can change the script that the voice is reading out to you. It is hard work, but possible.
