The Waiter From Hell- The Final Offer

MY FIRST PAYCHECK
It was my first paycheck from a good company I've ever worked with, in sales. The Basic plus the commission from the sales were totally rewarding after all those pressures and trembles before I got to close them all. Surprisingly, the Boss gave additional bonus from new accounts I had made for the company. I was overwhelmed that day, so I decided to pamper myself out.
I decided to treat myself over a nice meal, good ambiance, classy, fine dining restaurant. I was still single that time so, eating alone could not that be so difficult to choose...

AT THE RESTAURANT
I was so hungry that time after looking for a nice restaurant and finally entered and excited to have a full meal. The resto looks stylish and the guests were loaded. Well, I said to my self, got to try to be a King even for a day!
So I entered...
"Good evening," the head waiter said. "Table for two?"
"No, just me, please."
"Smoking or Non"
"Smoking area, please."
"Would you prefer to dine indoors or outdoors this evening?"
"I guess indors would be good."
"Very well Sir," he said. " Would you like to be seated in the main dining room or in our lovely solarium?"
"Oh, let me see., I think the solarium would be lovely," I said. I followed him there.
"Now would you prefer a view overlooking the golf course, the sunset on the lake or the signifcant mountains to the west?"
"Whatever you recommend," I said. Let him make a decision for a change, I thought.
He sat me by the window facing the golf course, the lake or perhaps the mountains. I couldn't tell which because it was dark outside.
A young man well dressed and good looking presented himself at my table. "Good evening, my name is Simon, I'll be your waiter this evening. Would you like a few minutes before I take your order?"
"No," I said. "I'm just a meat and potato guy, so I'll have a steak and baked potato."
"Soup or salad?"
"Salad"
"We have a mixed green salad, and a salad with baby shrimp."
"Just a mixed salad, okey?"
Whatever you wish, Sir. Dressing?"
I didn't want to make more decisions, "Whatever you've got will be fine."
"We have creamy Italian, blue cheese and...."
"Just bring me one and surprise me."
"Creamy Italian is our house specialty. Would that be all right, Sir?"
"Yeah." I was done with civility.
"And your baked potato...."
I knew that was coming. "I just want the potato dry, do you understand?"
"No butter?"
"No."
"No sour cream?"
"No! Don't you understand English?" I shouted. "I don't want anything on it. Just bring me a baked potato and a steak."
"Would you like it to be rare, medium well or well done?"
That did it. I threw my napkin on the floor, stood up and said, "How'll you like to settle this outside?"
"Fine with me, Sir. Would you prefer the parking lot, the alley or the street in front of the restaurant?"
"I prefer it right here!" I said, and punched him. He ducked and then fought back with a left hook right under my eye.
It was the first time all night he hadn't offered me a selection!

Nice service...I guess it's well-done! lol
Yes solarshingles, problem is they were too dammed trained! Maybe I'll take the fast food next time? What do you think? lol!
zylla3, what do you say, let's eat in Barrio Fiesta? Better or Cabalen? I miss Phil. Foods!!! I had a scratch though, but I still ate in that resto. lol....but I wouldn't bring the kids. That would be War!!! hehehehe
Lancedimetri, I know how it could look very wired, sometimes. I'd had my own restaurant(2) for 12 years and I had been really deeply into this serving business. And, if I am honest, I need to admit one secret: when we were finally closed the restaurant door on Sunday evening, we were rushing to the nearest McDonald's 50 miles away, or Pizzeria or any old fashioned pub to release the high tension/stress.
Solarshingles, yeah I think that could break the monotony. Why didn't I think of that in the first place?? two quarter pounder and a box of pizza? hhmmmmnn.. I like to eat very much. I usually eat a lot on extreme emotions. thanks for the little secret.
I've been surrounded by the best possible food, drinks and top chefs almost all my life and after many years it all comes back to the basics. I could really eat almost anything and I am not fussy at all. My weight jumps from 72kg up to 95kg and back, depends on the nature of my work. I even managed to cut milk chocolate out of my menu): I think, if one regularly eats quality food, some trips to McDonald's, pizza or any other fast food is just an interesting event. Which is your favorite food/dish?
Full service written! This is your best hub, in my view, simmering for a minute and then served with a punchline! Tasty.
Solarshingles, so you're in to the resto thing? My wife also works in the kitchen down Florida Hotel. I love when she cooks the Thai dishes, they're more on the herbs and spices. Well, the kids love going for burgers and pizza, sometimes they ask for some Japanese.
Michael, thanks. But after the inccident, an old fashioned bar or a massage does the trick. And a warm welcome from the kids eases all.
Very well, sir. Would you like me to comment on your hub? ;)
Ananta65,
Oh, let me see... make it spicy and juicy? Will you? lol!!!
Would that be sweet 'n' spicy or spicy 'n' hot then? ;)
No more choosing please...lol!! I had enough of them...hahaha...just do your thing....lol!!!
You too. Enjoy! ;)
Great reading...thank you.I look forward to more about the life in the Phillipines. I believe people are the greatest wonders in this world and that not getting to know about others is a loss.
annaw,
Thanks, It's nice to know someone has interest with my country, Philippines. I agree with you more that the most fascinating creature on this world are people. I get to read more of other cultures too in hub pages.
Hi Lance
Dining out,,,,,,I have experienced the gamut, from the 'in your face' type to the 'ghost server'. Only once, in recent memory, did I have the pleasure of being waited on by a young woman who was absolutely perfect. Her timing was impeccable! Very well spaced between drinks, appetizers and the main course and dessert. We placed our order, and she did NOT ask 20,000 questions. Not only was this girl good with her timing, meaning, she let us have a few minutes before asking for our order, then she would bring out the appetizers and allow us enough time to get through that, etc etc. NEVER did she ask a question just as we had a mouthful of food, which I find happens MOST of the time. On top of all this excellent service, she was friendly and funny!
We were so impressed, when she came by with our check, I asked her could I see the manager,,,,,she said certainly, probably wondering, uhoh,,,why do they want the manager? The manager came by, and we told her how absolutely wonderful she was. We were very surprised to hear that not only was the manager glad to hear what we had to say, but she informed us that the girl just started working there. Needless to say, we left her a HUGE tip, something I've never done. The manager gave her the tip, and the waitress ran over to our table and said this is not necessary, really,,,,we just smiled and said it absolutely is :)
Trish
Trish,
I would love her to be my attendant. If she was and not Simon, I would ask her for a dance, maybe a lipstick on my collar, not a bruise under my eye... lol!! She seems nice, hope other restos hire like her. Fast and easy, funny, entertaining, and with the right timing...always. Bon appetit!!
Hi Lance,
I'm sure there are equally competent wait staff in other places, however, there also are the 'not so competent' ones, which I run into more often than not. And, perhaps my opinion is a bit skewed, for all I know, the waiter/waitress I found to be lacking may just have had a bad day, or have personal issues crowding their mind, which does happen, it's only human.
So, I will reserve future judgement with that thought in mind :)
Bon appetit to you too!
Trish
Trish,
Sometimes, a "not so well-trained" wait staff might come in handy...lol.. Those that go with the book, no self judgement or common sense, that everything should be properly arranged, in lined, is too stiff for me. I like cool, funny attendant than the "formal ones". Yeah, mostly these staffs are also striken with problems or personal issues, giving you a not so good service and you should be considerate about it. You're a nice guest.
Hi Lance,
I absolutely agree with you. I'm not one for the 'formal, stuffy' type LOL,,,,give me someone who is personable every time :)
I try to be a 'nice' guest, but there have been times when my own irritation showed,,,,,,
I am a coffee addict, and I have found that when I order a cup, I need to tell them, 'yes, I'll have a cup as long as it's freshly brewed'. I can't tell you how many times I was given old, luke-warm coffee. It's just a pet peeve of mine. I realize not everyone wants coffee with their lunch or dinner, however, I do, and if you're in business to serve the public, then you better put out a good product.
Trish
That was funny. It does get annoying when all you want is food and they give you so many darn choices that by the time they have finished with you and left, you can't even remember what you have ordered.
Trish,
I learned one lesson that that day on formality.....an equation,
over trained waiter X choices + Formality = empty stomach + a bruise under the eye!
hahaha lol!!!
Donnaleemason,
Yeah you're right... pretty annoying. All I want is to eat, but they gave me damn choices for appetizer? lol!! God thing though I'm stucked with my steak and baked potato..I should have taken burgers or pizza instead... lol...
Cute Hub! like the twist at the end of the story!
Wouldn't want to be a server for anything! It's bad enough being the customer!!
Do you suppose there's a special school they send servers to to learn how to be rude and time questions for when you just put a bite in your mouth? lol...
lancedimetri, i love your hubs, each and every one of them. this one was a hoot! when one is tired and hungry, one just wants the food now, and wants to be left the heck alone to enjoy it, it's difficult, sometimes, to be civilized, cute, sweet, adorable, and loveable when eating out anymore.
Sometimes one wishes those waiters wore longer neck ties so one could tie a knot in the end of it and stick the knot between their toes!
Thanks, LD, great hub.
I don't like waiters that think they deserve a tip just because they work at a restaurant. I want good service. I spend my money the way I want to.

Very nice story about fine dinning in posh restaurant with specially trained 'serving' staff. There is not many chances to find a common sense at such places...simply too high):
