The Wealth of the Wellspring
74Drinking from the wellspring of salvation
Understanding is a wellspring of life
The wellspring by definition is simply the source or starting place of a stream or spring. What a wonderful picture of life! If life is like a spring and if real living is like the vibrant stream of flowing water, then to find its source is to discover where real living begins. Here is what I see as the abundant life that Jesus promised all believers!
Proverbs 16:22 says, Understanding is a wellspring of life to him that hath it!
As a boy, I recollect riding with my dad, always the outdoorsman, in the family car. Things appeared so much simpler then. We rode for what seemed like hours to this easily bored eleven year old boy. We traversed the mountains and valley roads while mom and pop made small talk. My sister and I picked at each other for entertainment. Mother scolded as if she could not understand why we were not excited by the endless trees, and dad threatened to stop the car to better educate us on the lessons of nature. We lived in the foothills of the Great Smokey Mountains, and my father loved to take us on frequent trips into the nearby wilderness areas. As we traveled the foothills and valleys, Dad would talk about what it used to be like when he was younger.
On one hot summer day I remember him stopping the car, swiveling his head with a smile and asking my sister and me, “Does anyone want a drink?”
We were on this mountain, and I looked around and did not see a Coke machine anywhere! Pop bid us follow him, and like children following the pied piper we hiked to what felt as if it were straight into that mountain. Dad knew the spot, and we arrived shortly. There was a little stream that appeared to spout like a miniature geyser from a crevice in the mountain. As I approached with a child's curiosity, I saw the clearest water, bubbling effervescently as if it were alive. “This is where the spring begins,” my dad said. He went on to tell us that the wellspring fed the spring which streamed into the very river which had been our traveling companion. The river in turn flowed to the ocean. How important that little wellspring was! There is wealth in a wellspring!
We all knelt down and drank from this fountain. Wow! It was cool as if it had been in a refrigerator, and it had a natural sweetness about it. I drank and drank and drank! Who would have thought that I would like this better than cola! I learned something that day! A wellspring has wealth.

The source of life and living are in Jesus Christ.
In a similar manner, there are many riches in understanding the ways of God. It is like a wellspring! It was no accident that Jesus said,
John 10:10 KJV Bible: The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
The source of life and living are in Jesus Christ. I encourage you to get to know Jesus Christ today! He is more than an historical figure! He is my Savior, my Lord and my wellspring of abundant life!
He is a wellspring of joy to me. I abound in peace and hope! He is my eternal wellspring!
Rom 15:13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
He is a wellspring of love to me! I abound in knowing Him as personal savior. I abound in grace that is more than sufficient, and bestowed upon by my Wellspring!
2Co 8:7 Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.
Yes, there is wealth in the wellspring of understanding. Many things I do not know; a few things I do know; but I count both that which I do and that which I do not as nothing that I may know Him!
How do you get this abundant life? Your trek must go through the wellspring! His name is Jesus. He told the woman at the well (see John 4) that he had water that would eternally quench her thirst. He saved her and used this poor sinner woman in an obscure and unreachable place and condition to reach Samaria. In essence He told His disciples that He had to go through Samaria because someone needed a wellspring!
Hear my point. Wherever you are on your journey of living; whether you are on the mountain, in the valley, traversing the foothills, or climbing your way out of a pit; there is a wellspring in reach to you. His name is Jesus and His gift is eternal, abundant life.
