The Weapon of Opportunity
67The Weapon of Opportunity in Self Defense
Here in Canada and many other countries around the world, it is illegal to carry a weapon to use in Self Defense.
However, there are many pocket items that you probably already carry on your person, that could be used as a weapon of opportunity, if you were to become the intended victim of an unprovokes assault.
Having certain items available and more importantl, knowing how you could actually use them can give you a whole lot of added confidence in yourself. This extra confidence about you may even prevent you from becoming an intended victim in the first place.
Old people can be very frail, sometimes there is very little tissue between skin and bone. To strike with their own hands could fesult in hurting themselves more than the attacker.
Having items available that could be used to strike with, changes the equation and brings about a new found confidence.
Have a think about the items that you already carry or items that you could carry and also how you might be able to use them as a weapon of opportunity.
The advantage of using a weapon of opportunity is that the do not necessarily even resemble a typical weapon, therfore, they are much less likely to be used against you, should the attacker get their hands on it.
Pens, pencils, keychains, water bottles, rolled newspaper, umbrellas, walking sticks, cell phones, books, and small flashlights that come to mind quickly. Think about items that have another primary and practical use.
Inside your house, you have a whole array of items available in every single room. Have a think about it, what items do you have in your kitchen, lounge, bathroom, bedrooms etc
With a little training, these items will become a very effective weapon of opportunity should you become the intended victim of an attack.

Its very intersting to know that there are so many things that you can use as a weapon
I've always kept a baseball bat in the bedroom closet just in case I ever need it. I never stopped to think that there are many other things besides my bat that could be utilized as weapons if needed. Great eye opener!
I never thought about the elderly that way before and that is an excellent point.
I carry a lot of things in my purse and it will be helpful to see what objects would be the most effective to use in case of an attack. Can never be too careful with the things that are going on in this city.
I've heard about the keys but how would you use other item as self defence?
I'm looking forward to learning about how I can use random available items to defend myself, should the need arise. I think this is an excellent skill to have. With violent incidents rising it only makes sense to educate ourselves with these techniques. Thank you for offering this service!
education is the key.
Very good to know.
I always hold my keys securely in my hand when walking to my car after work at night - I'd love to learn more about other items that could be useful if ever I should need to defend myself.
Its always good to feel safe. For me, especially being a girl and working the night.

This was informative as the only thing I have ever been told is to carry your keys in your hand to scratch your attacker.
