What, you've never seen a piece of toast walking down the street?

Mr. Toast is the creation of Dan Goodsell, an artist living in Los Angeles. I first discovered Mr. Toast a couple of years ago, and it was love at first sight. I mean, what's not to love about a walking piece of toast with friends like a hard-boiled egg (at least I think he is hard-boiled), a strip of bacon and an onion? A drunken carrot, a lemon, a duck and a candycorn, among others, round off this unique, oddly compelling cast of characters.

Fascinating, isn't it?

Mr. Toast enjoys leisurely strolls in the park, sitting on rooftops in owl costumes, jogging and jazzercize, doing crafts with Joe the Egg, and pro wrestling from time to time. And those are just a few of his lively pursuits.

Here he is in his wrestler's outfit, about to take on Leif (El Hoja).

Cosmic Mr. Toast

He even ventures out in space from time to time.

His friends have their own hobbies and business ventures - Joe the Egg and Shaky Bacon run a box-and-tape business, Shaky Bacon dabbles in medicine, performing experimental surgery with the help of the classic game "Operation", Mope the Onion operates a kissing booth at carnivals (without much success) and Lemonhead keeps a pet bird, Blackie, among his other interests.

Cast of characters (some, anyway :)

I think the allure is that, while resembling something cute and right out of a children's storybook, the scenes in which Mr. Toast finds himself border on the quirky - Wrestling, measuring clouds by standing under them with a measuring tape, performing magic tricks such as pulling a bacon strip out of a hat, and dressing Joe the Egg in a turkey costume for the Thanksgiving pageant.

Mr. Toast's comics are all one panel, brightly colored and composed to tell a small story, sort of like microscopic graphic novels.

In one comic, Mr. Toast is an emcee for what appears to be a game show "The Money Chamber", with Shaky Bacon as a contestant attempting to snatch as much money as he can while he is in the money chamber.

In another ("An Exotic Visitor"), Mr. Toast and Joe the Egg are visited by a coconut dressed in an outfit reminiscent of King Kamehameha.

So, when you're feeling blue, just visit Mr. Toast's website:

After spending a little time there, you'll walk away feeling minty-fresh all over. Plus, good things will happen to you (and if you consider flying monkeys a good thing, well, even better.)
