Do you want to start a garden but lack the land, time, or physical ability to do so?

Yardsharing can help!

What is Yardsharing?

Yardsharing is a growing grassroots movement that seeks to connect wanna-be gardeners in order to share land, tools, skills, and sheer brute manpower to create a cooperative garden.

There are as many yardsharing arrangements as there are yardsharers.

For example, if you own land and want a garden, but don't have the time to devote to maintaining one, you can find someone who has time and skills but no land to maintain it for you in exchange for some of the produce.

If you are young and enthusiastic but inexperienced, you can find an experienced older gardener and lend a hand with the heavy lifting in exchange for mentoring.

Maybe you want to start a garden but have soil that is too hard to break through without expensive specialized tools. You can find someone with better soil and help out in exchange for yard wastes and other compost materials to spread on your own property as the beginnings of a "lasagna" garden - no tilling required.

The possibilities are nearly endless!

Although yardsharing is primarily used by people interested in starting a vegetable garden in order to grow their own food, gardeners who are primarily interested in ornamentals can also create yardsharing arrangements.

Yardsharing is not just a great way to connect would-be gardeners to other would-be gardeners to build a mutually beneficial relationship, it also has many other benefits, including the following:

  • Yardsharing provides you with fresh, healthy, locally grown food.
  • Yardsharing is a great way to save money on food bills.
  • Yardsharing can also save money on tools and other gardening equipment.
  • Yardsharing beautifies neighborhoods, adding to home values.
  • Yardsharing reduces your carbon footprint.
  • Yardsharing is a great educational tool for urban children.
  • and more
