The bathroom scale
64The bathroom scale was introduced to the United States from Europe in 1885 and has been embedded in the daily lives of people all over the world since then. Its popularity has influenced the bathroom scale to be considered a necessity in a household as well as an obsession. There is no debate; a scale is a useful tool. We all need to know our weight for health reasons or just to kill our curiosity in our weight obsessed world. Whatever the reasons, the production of the bathroom floor scale has increased dramatically and a variety of technologically apt scales have emerged on the market.
Digital scales
Bathroom digital scale is the most prominent scale being sold on the market. The average price varies from $20.00 to $80.00. It is a floor scale where you simply step on the slightly elevated part to weight yourself. Your weight is displayed in numbers on a LED screen. As manufacturers continue to evolve the bath scale, sensors are placed on the outer corners to ensure exact measure. It is considered the most accurate bathroom scale on the market for its price, and it is more often than not battery operated (lithium battery) making it the most practical for households as well. The only down sides of a digital scale are it does not measure body fat, and does not have a memory for previous results
Dial scales
Dial scales are becoming less popular with the invention of more technologically advanced scales. The dial scale is a floor scale that uses spring pressure to weigh you. The results are displayed on a dial with a hand pointing to your average weight. Dial scale prices are definitely the least expensive on the market today, beginning at $10.00
Body composition scales
This is by far the best bathroom scale. It not only weights you but calculates the lean to fat ratio of your weight. Some weight scales can also determine the amount of water content in your body. Body composition analyser scales use bio-impedance technology to determine your percentage of body fat or lean body mass. Bio-impedance technology uses an non-invasive electric current to travel through the body`s tissue and calculates the changes of blood volume in the aorta. The validity of this technology is being questioned since many factors can slightly alter the results. An intentional change in your breathing pattern can alter your blood flow, thus resulting in inaccurate responses from the scale.
To own a scale, to not own a scale....
I believe the choice to own a scale should be thought out thoroughly. A scale can be a practical item to own and can benefit you in terms of health. A doctor may recommend that you monitor your weight at home with a bathroom scale, in order to keep your weight at a healthy level. However, some people are more prone to utilize a scale in an obsessive manner. If you have adolescent children in the house or someone who has insecurities based on their weight, a scale may act as a catalyst towards negative thoughts. I would myself if a scale is absolutely needed and would be put towards positive use before buying one.
Best time to weight yourself
You are suppose to weight yourself at the same time everyday if you are tracking your weight daily. I would suggest when you wake up in the morning before breakfast. At this point in your routine, your body is at a constant temperature and is at its most “emptiest” which gives you the most accurate results.
Whatever your reasons may be for inquiring on a bathroom scale, use it in your best interests, which hopefully are to maintain the best health you can. On that note: Happy weighing everyone!
