73Best Documentaries Ever Made
I've seen tons of documentaries but the ones that appeal to me are historical, biblical, and scientific. For instance www.historychannel.com has an excellent array of documentaries from the history of the world to "Life After People." Here is a trailer for you to view.
Life After People
Presidential Documentaries
Since we are in election year and a historical one at that, I recomment getting the Presidents Series on DVD. You can find those on http://www.thehistorychannel.com/ too.
The Presidents DVD

These two are my favorite. I also love the Decoding The Past documentaries because they do exactly what the title says. The History Channel (as you probably can tell) is my favorite for documentaries. Decoding The Past are documentaries from research and experts of certain topics, that makes clear of hidden truths. Some truths are hard for people to embrace because it may contradict what we call normal. They go into the depth of issues from political cover-ups to greatest religious battles of all times.
TBN is another excellent TV station that shows plenty of documentaries if you are into Christianity and the Bible. They usually come on late at night between 12 midnight-3am. I love when they talk about Israel and the end time prophecies. Much like the History Channel, they too interview religious experts and actually take you to the places identified. Some of the greatest theologians make appearances in these documentaries. TBN can be installed to your desktop and you can watch the broadcasts anytime if the station isn't among your cable network.
Believe it or not CNN and MSNBC play documentaries every so often. Before Election Day, President-Elect Barack Obama, Vice President-Elect Joe Biden, Senator John McCain, and Govenor Sara Palin's documentaries were on both channels. Recently the comparison of President-Elect Obama and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr documentary aired I believe on Saturday or Sunday.
If you ever want to take a trip down memory lane, VH1 has the I love the 80's and so forth. These are always on. These documentaries go back in time reminding us of the good old days in pop culture, movies, headliners, celebrity updates, etc. Those are fun to watch. My husband and I sit back with pizza and chocolate remebering what we were doing when a certain song or movie or headliner came hit the airwaves.
Lifetime is another amazing channel for documentaries. Although they mostly cater to the celebrities, the are good to record for your library. You actually get the story from the horses mouth. That is if they are still alive to do the biography.
But these are the types of documentaries I love to watch. I am a historian by nature and you can't know where you are going until you learn where you came from. I pray these suggestions were helpful. Sit back and enjoy what I enjoy and have fun.

I am also into good historical documentaries. I am just glad that you did not list anything by Michael Moore, since his work doesn't exactly qualify as documentary.
