What's happening to my 1st love?

"Rap is something you do, Hip-hop is something you live" *KRS ONE*

Truer words have never been spoken but I think the line between Rap and Hip-Hop has become blurred and it's the young people who are suffering(even if they don't know it)

Some young people may argue that I'm just some "Old head" that's lost touch with the trends of music and I'm just hating on the new stuff. NOT TRUE!

There are some hip-hop artists out there that are putting out some really good music. There are also some "Pop" stars out there that are just riding the trends and putting out rapping fluff with no substance set to really catchy beats or remaking stuff that came out before alot of listeners were born and trying to pawn it off as original. I HATE THAT by the way.

Speaking as a songwriter it enrages me when new artists come out with some bubblegum rhymes and shoot to the top of the charts when real MC's with real skills can't even get played on the radio.

Now that's not to say that there's no place for the Pop music that is taking the world by storm but STOP CALLING IT HIP-HOP! It's disrespectful to the pioneers that made it possible for young artists to come out and make fortunes for themselves and their loved ones.

Hip-Hop itself is a culture created by a need to express what was happening in the lives of the inner city youths back in the 70's It consists of 4 elements.

  1. The MC (Master of Ceromony) The MC is the voice of Hip-Hop the speaker of the house so to speak. The one who directs the course of the party, show, or event.
  2. The DJ (Disc Jockey) Arguably the most important element. With out the DJ there is no party. They are the ones who provide the music itself. It was a DJ that created this thing called Hip-Hop.
  3. The B-Boy/Girl (Break-Dancer) Poetry in motion. It has been said the B-Boy/Girl has saved countless lives because the dance battle took the place of actual battles over things such as turf and minor disagreements
  4. The Grafitti Artist (Writers/Taggers) This is a more contraversial element due to it's link to vandalism. Thousands of extremely talented artists with no cavasses to paint on took using their surroundings to express themselves. If you can get pass the whole vandalism thing, you will see some of the truely amazing artwork created with a simple can of spray paint.

I think it's important that some of these new artists out there understand how it all started. Maybe later I'll go into a little more detail about the history of Hip-Hop but for now just know this...

"Rap is something you do Hip-Hop is something you live"

You do not write a lot of hubs, but the standard is very good, and I wish you could write more. I promise I will read all of them.

The difference between Rap and Hip Hop is that Hip Hop is the father of rap.Like blues and rock and roll, there was bound to be a offspring,Rap is basically profit driven, its about how much money can be made, how many units can be sold, how many ringtones can be downloaded,Its corporate in a way.Rap is really about entertaining, and profit a catchy hooky a nice beat can make you rich.Hip Hop on the other hand is all about lyrics, knowledge, the reason Hip hop is not big any more is because The consumers don't demand it.I personally don't have a problem with rap because it is a part of Hip Hop but its not hip hop.Hip Hop is a way of life. And attitude, its deeper than music, its dancing its djing its emceeing its rapping, its business, its art,Hip Hop is constantly evolveing into many different things and sub catergories, because Hip Hop is the only art form thats universaly accepted, you have asian hip hoppers, latinos, africans, indians, caucasions, its no longer a child of black america anymore its a world wide thing that changes and adapts to all cultures, its bound to be some good stuff and some bad.I like it all.because hip hop was made to create oppurtunity and thats exactly what it does, creates oppurtunity for everyone that can master it.Yes you have to master it.even Rap has to be mastered,Its not that easy to create a"simple" song like do the stanky leg and go double platinum!whether you are rapping are into Hip Hop you have to be off the chain with it.So Hip-hop is the father of rap but which ever you choose its going to take talent.anyway I like them both, can't love one and hate the other.

There's no real difference between hip hop and rap. Hip hop doesn't have cuss words, that's all.

Rap is actually only about 1/4 of what Hip Hop represents, like i said before rap is what you do Hip-Hop is how you live.

Read "The Origin of Rap Music" and listen to "Rapologist Speaks '94" and you'll know that Rap was created by Black people and "hip-hop" was a European term fornursery rhymes that Jews used to sell Rap Music to white people and globally. Hip-hop was the code word that Jews used to sell the expliotation ofyoung Black people globally. KRS-1 was a big part of the Jew takeover of Rap Music with the term "hip-hop" in 1987. Listen to "Rapologist Speaks '94" or go to the Library of Congress and read "Rap vs. Hip-hop - The Debate Since 1987 - also by Robert Jr. James McClendon.

Good article. I wrote a similiar one on music. I believe Rap evolved from Hip Hop & the difference is that Rap is blunt, no "sugar-coating" & delivers a direct, reality-based message. Hip Hop is the opposite; fun, light-hearted & entertaining.

Good point about artists with no originality trying to pawn off classic remakes of the 60s-70s as their work. I'm a former spoken word artist who value lyrical content above all & share your frustration with "garbage" artists who scale the charts hiding behind "catchy" beats, hooks, & fancy equipment! Also, nice break down of the terminology!
