The early History of South Africa Oom Paul Kruger
62The early History of South Africa Oom Paul Kruger
Now Oom (Uncle) Paul beloved leader of the Boer Republic of Zuid Africa or the old Transvaal was an unusual man he had survived the massacre of his entire family by the Zulu as they had stormed down upon the unsuspecting Voortrekkers (Pioneers). He had fallen in love with another survivor of the same massacre and he vowed upon that day that he would never allow another massacre of his Volk (Folk) by any one not even the Mighty British Empire.
Oom Paul had a habit of holding the raadsaal (parliament) on the front stoop (porch) of his old farmhouse on the main street of Pretoria. Of course, this gave the volk the opportunity of hearing and seeing exactly how the government worked the personal touch (imagine the Grand Empress of the British holding government meetings on the lawn at Buck house?). no indeed she would not be amused but Oom Paul well loved by his people could get away with it because he was the type of man every Boer could look at and say now there is a man after my own heart.
