The economy officially went into a depression.. I got laid off!
72Well, I figured out the difference between a recession, and a depression last Thursday.A recession was when my neighbor got laid off... A depression was when I was told I had to be let go.
This is serious stuff , folks. The amount of jobs lost in November alone, was over 500,000.. So there will be alot of people not having a very nice Christmas season.
On a personal note, I was a manager at an Alabama Chrysler dealership. I. (along with the owner's son), were the two highest paid employees at the dealership. Well, I'll bet you can figure out who got the walking papers, when business fell to a crawl. After 28 years in the same field, I am at a quandry as to what to do. No one is hiring in the car business.
Ok, enough about me, I am curious haw we got to this point. How did it get so bad, so fast?A few short months ago, we were cruising along, bitching about 3 dollar gas, next thing we know, armageddon.
I remember driving to work(that place I used to go), and hearing on the radio, aboutLeman bros, or Stearns, Hell, I thought they were a musical group or a matress company.
The next day, I here about Aig being broke, the market is down 800 points, and off we went.Home forclousers, the auto industry, 401ks being wiped out, layoffs and a nation wide depression.... Emotional depression, as well as economic.
I am not an expert, but my theory is that corporate greed, and lack of accountability, is the cause of this. Nobody seems to care past their own nose what happens.Enron, Worldcorp, Healsouth ... People making billions, off the sweat ,toil and tears of working people. They pull some bogus loans, swindle money around, stick it their off shore accounts, and disappear in their luxury jets.
They are out of touch with the common man.The real divider between people isn't black or white..catholic or protestant... young or old.... The great chism is between the 95% of people that work and produce, and the 5% of the banking elite, who push paper, and get rich on the misfortune of all!
Well, regardless of your political views, we must all pray for Obama. for these are terrible times. People have made a comparison of Obama and Kennedy...If he straightens out this mess, I think a more apt comparison would be Franklin Roosevelt!
Well, I have tons more to say, but alas, I need to get off my ass and look for a job! Merry Christmas! mike the salesman

thanks so much for your kind words!
Hi Mike, I agree that a lot of the problems stem from big shots who were more concerned with their bottom lines than they were about the people working for them. I will keep you in my thoughts and I wish you luck finding work.
Thanks, Ardie. I appreciate your kind thoughts!
well i hope you get out of depression soon and land a job which although might not pay as well as your last but something you'll love...in time for Christmas! :D
Best of luck Mike with your job search
Thanks Chris! I sure I'll find something! I appreciate you!
Thanks Lgali.. All the best wishes mean more than all of you know!
I feel your pain...my husband was affected just like you after 27 yrs. of service in the accounting field except it was because of a merger. That was 5 years ago. We have not fully recovered and today my son and husband's hours were cut back. In spite of it all we keep the faith which is working for us. I recommend that for you too. Good luck in your job search. And YES, we must all PRAY for OBAMA.
Best of luck in finding new employment. I would think your skills as a car salesman are transferrable to other businesses that would make you an asset to potential employers.
Dotti Thanks for your encouragement! It helps to here of similar situations..and life goes on, huh? God Bless, Mike
good luck. I'm sure everything will work out.
Just relax and try to figure out how you can make some income without them. I think it is not going to get any better any time soon...
Well, of course if you need advice. If you don't, just trash what I said :)

It's tough out there - but I'll tell you from experience that I've started evaluating my goals, my attitude more and I'm glad that I've been forced to learn something new .... I have a friend that was in car sales and he recorded his story along with what he's doing today..... you may want to check it out.

I have been unemployed since March... I have applied to @ least 100+ jobs and not even had 1 call back... I don't know how much longer I can go like this... Something has got to give!!!
It is bad all over..they talk of recovery, but I don't see it! Good luck to you, Dawn
Mike I just realized this hub is almost a year old. I hope you have found a job by now.
I have been unemployed and actively seeking work since 5/08. I resorted to moving my family from Michigan (the highest rate of unemployment in the country) to Florida in hopes of "greener pastures" and so far all were finding is weeds. My husband who is a certified mechanic, for 13 years can't find anything either. I could careless who to blame for the downfall, I'm just praying for a pickup! Being self employed for most of that time, my husband doesn't qualify for unemployment, and we have been surviving on mine. As of today, I have 4 weeks left, Merry Christmas to our 3 children. I heard they are trying for another extention, I pray it goes through, I lost count on the resumes we've sent out, and not 1 call back. I totally understand the meaning of depression! Good Luck to everyone else out there who's feeling the pain. God Bless...
