The facts about oral bacteria
69By Howard Bauer Jr.
The number of species of oral bacteria in the mouth is unknown. However researchers believe there are between 550 to 650 different species. These microbes live on every surface in your mouth, not just your teeth.
The average person swallows about one liter of saliva every 24 hours. That means you are swallowing 100 BILLION microbes each day. These microbes grow in the bio-film in our mouths. This is the film we try to brush away twice daily. Now you can see that its not just your teeth that need brushing but everywhere in your mouth.
The rate these microbes multiply is incredible. Scientists say they double every five hours. So if you swallow 100 billion of these bacteria daily then you have 20 billion in your mouth and that is after you brush.
Those of you who follow my blog and website have read about the health dangers of oral bacteria and what it can do to your organs. It can cause liver, and kidney problems, and these microbes have been linked to heart attack and stroke. Men, it can also hit us where it hurts. These bacteria have been linked to low sperm count and even infertility.
The bacteria in our mouths is harmful not only to good oral health but to your overall health as well. It is clear that we cant get rid of them, but we can control them. We must have a vigilant regiment of daily oral hygiene combined with regular visits to your dentist. Remember brush everything including your tongue both top and under, don't forget the top of your mouth and inside lips and cheeks. Make sure to floss daily.
