The fastest way to learn a new language

I speak 3 languages, and use 3 of them on daily basis. I learned my second languages when I was adult. Meaning I did not grow up in an enviroment which I could learn a second language by default.

So I really had to "teach" myself those two languages. There are many things I wish I knew when I started off learning my second languages. In this hub I would like to share my experience regarding the best and the fastest way to learn a new languag.

Immersion Vs Step by Step

IUnlike many teachers and institutes try to teach, language is very difficult to learn if you want to learn it step by step. See Learning a new language is very different from learning Math or Physiscs. Most people try to learn the alphabet first, then how each letter is pronounced, the combine letters, trust me step by step approach is the most boring way to learn a new language.

What you want to do is to immerse yourself into the language. Jump in the pool and then  you will learn swimming. You  learn language fast not by "studying it" but by  "speaking" and "becoming" the speaker of that language.

Let your electronics teach you!

Most of electonic stuff you have aleady have menus in a dozen languages, take advantage of that.

Change your cell phone language to that language, if you can, change your computer's language. And do all this before you can even understand any single word. I am serious, after the third time you want to make a call you have already learned how the words “call” , “reject”, “cancel” are written. In few short hours you will learn how to write the word "start" in the new language!

Let your iPOD teach you!

There are so many good language learning Audio CDs out there. Buy one of them and start using your NET time for learnig, On the way to work or school listen and practice. When shopping in the mall listen to language lessons. Whenever you find the chance turn it on and listen, and practice.

The best Audio language system I ever came across

By using their CDs you start to learn phrases instead of words and boring grammer. You listen to the phrase and the translation in English, then you ought to repeat it a couple of times. Then the second phrase comes, and the third. By the time you come to the fourth phrase, it again asks you of the first phrase. And this process goes on and on.

On each lesson you start to expand the phrases you know and how to change words inside that phrase. For instance, at first it teaches you “Where is St. Jack Street” then it teaches you “Where can I find Mr. X ?” So you will get a feeling of how to ask “Where” questions, without entering into detailed grammar.

In facts I dare you listening to the first Pimsluer’s audio CD in any languaeg, following the instructions and trying not to learn! It is almost impossible.

Let your interests teach you!

Read the books you have already read and loved in the language you want to learn. You will be surprised how much this motivates you. Do not be scared to peak of books even if you are beginner. Just try to read, and understand a couple of words each time.

Watch the movies you love or TV series you love in the new language. Hey, listen, don't you love "Friends"? You probably do. Buy "Friends" DVDs in the language you are trying to learn. They are available in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, you name it! Many even come with subtitles.

Let the internet community teach you!

If you don’t find native speakers around you, you can use the Internet to find them and communicate with them. Find where they chat, where do they blog and start throwing whatever words or phrases you have learned to them and see what they respond. Use your dictionary if you have to in order to understand them. You will be surprised as to how many people would love to help you learn their native language.

A word of warning:

If you are serious about learning a new language, talk and communicate with NATIVEs more than other people who are just getting started learning the language. The starters are just like you, although it is easier to practice with people at your level of proficiency it is not efficient way of learning a new language. Speaking with Natives when you are a beginner may not feel very comfortable but it is surely rewarding.

The best way to learn a language:

The best way I can offer you is to travel to that country, spend your holiday time there or go there for at list a short working holiday. There are many institutes that offer you jobs in Europe, and in exchange they provide you with accommodation and language classes. Trust me it is a lot more fun to study in Spanish in Spain and French in France!
