Do to the great response I have received from The history of pennies,I have decided to keep installments coming.

All the coins I am listing are from the United States. There are many collectable,"foreign" coins too!!

Coin collecting can be a fun and interesting hobby.

In this hub,we will take a look at the 2 cent piece, the 3 cent piece,half-dimes,and nickels.

Scroll down and learn something about money!!!

2 cent piece

This coin was not very accepted..One of the very big things about the 2 cent piece is it was the first coin to introduce:In God We Trust on it.

Made of French bronze, the coin was minted from 1864-1873.

Silver 3 cent piece

The need for a 3 cent piece was great at the time this coin was developed. This coin was primarly silver. It was minted from 1853-1873.

These coins are highly collectable now because of their silver content. One of the biggest problem with these coins was that people were "hoarding"them because they were silver. That is when our government decided on the nickel 3 cent piece.

Nickel 3 cent piece

Because of the "hoarding"of silver 3 cent pieces the mint developed the nickel 3 cent piece.Pictured her,it too is a very collectable coin.

3 cent pieces were used so much then because of the price of stamps.

These coins were minted from 1865-1889.In 1889 postage rates changed,so the 3 cent piece was done away with.

Half-dimes

One of the first types of coins ever minted in the U.S. was the half dime. No,it is not a nickel,it is a half dime.

We have become so used to calling our 5 cent coins nickels because of the metal they are made with.

The half dime was made primarily of silver.

From top to bottom I have pictured some beautiful examples thanks to all at:

First is the flowing hair minted from 1794-1795.Such a beautiful coin;wish I owned one.

Next,we have a draped bust variety. These were minted from 1796-1805.That bust just wets my lips.

After that there is a capped bust--lot of breast men at the mint in those days. This coin was minted from 1829-1837

Last but not least,we have the seated liberty.I do have one of these in my collection;an 1871.The seated liberty was minted from 1837-1873.

Silver was going up in value;just to costly to make half dimes anymore.

Nickels

Nickels

This is the coin that,in my opinion, collectors should be jumping on.Even the new nickels because of all the design changes.I will go down the list of the nickels pictured here starting 1866-now.

First coin shown is the shield nickel.I have a few of these;a very neat design. They were minted from 1866-1883.If you don't have one, they can be a great buy and I feel they will slowly go up in value.

Liberty nickel

We then had the Liberty nickel,or some call it a "V" nickel because on the back is a big V.In 1883,the year it was first minted,it only had the V on the back. After that year,up to 1912,they put the word cents under the V.

Buffalo nickels

Next in line is the Indianhead or buffalo nickel.Highly collectable,be careful if purchasing;make sure you can read the date. The dates were real high points on these coins and would wear off. They were minted from 1913-1938.

Jefferson nickels

From 1938-now are nickels are Jefferson nickels. We have had some design changes with Jefferson's appearance just recently.

In 1942 up until 1945 nickels were 35% silver. The reason for this was:the war needed nickel supplys for ammo. These are highly collectable for the silver content.

Hope you all enjoyed this installment on United States coin history.Stay tuned for the next installment!!
