The Liberal View on Abortion
84
To understand the liberal position on abortion you must first purge through all the propaganda put forth by the right in an attempt to gather support for their personal position. First and foremost pro-choice and pro-abortion are not synonymous. I'm a liberal who believes in God, I am pro-choice however, I personally find abortion morally objectionable, much in the same way I support ones right to bare arms while finding hunting for sport repugnant. I understand that separating ones subjective views on morality from the rights of individuals under the law.
Roe v Wade was based on a woman's residual right of privacy, meaning the government does not have the right to intrude on a matter which should be left to the individual. The decision is left to the mother up to the point the fetus becomes viable. None of us, whether liberal or conservative can answer the question when life begins, the court understood this. It however, can be determined when the fetus is able to sustain life free of the womb; this is where the court makes the distinction.
The notion that criminalizing abortion will save life is unrealistic. For the 93 years of abortion prohibition it is estimated that 1.2 million illegal abortions were performed each year, most of which were not done by a doctor. The result was often serious injury and sometimes even death to many of the woman. The reality is that women always have, and always will have abortions is they so choose to. By imposing anti-abortion legislation you are only creating greater problems.
If you are truly pro-life you would be better served to focus on alternatives to limit the number of unwanted pregnancies. You would be intent on creating an environment conducive to young single mothers with children. The social programs that conservatives are so anxious to cut funding are the very programs that are designed to help young mothers who chosen to keep their child. The great hypocrisy with the pro life crowd is that they love the fetus, but they often abandon the child.
Every child deserves a chance in life and I hope that some day abortion will be something nobody would consider. In the interim we should be working toward improving the quality of life for all of our children today. Too many of our youth are living in poverty, lack sufficient healthcare, and are denied a high quality education. As result some will suffer from disease that could have been prevented with access to doctors, others will fall into lives of crime because they lack the skills and resources necessary to get a job. Think of all the lives that cold actually be saved by simply addressing these issues. Let's end the hypocrisy and show compassion for the children after they leave the maternity ward.

Hi Opettye, You voiced my sentiments EXACTLY. I would love to see more emphasis on pregnancy prevention as well as support for mothers and their babies after birth. Couldn't agree more that those who advocate for the life of the fetus only seem to care about the fetus up until it's born. After that, that "precious life" becomes a "social liability." I, too, see abortion as a necessary evil. But criminalizing it is not going to stop it, as you point out.
Well thought out and well written hub. I look forward to reading your next one!
