The many species of Trout
71Fishing Journal
The many species I haven't caught of trout, but on this journey, you will see that I have caught quite a few of them.
I'll start out as a youngster growing up in Idaho.I lived by the Snake River,so It didn't take long to get to a fishing hole.I caught mostly Rainbows in the Snake from 8 to 16 inchers. There was Dry creek which fed into the Snake I also fished and in the creek I caught Rainbows and Cutttroat trout.I had to drive 50 miles to get into the Southern Idaho Mountains to fish the creeks up there.Elevation around 5500 feet.In these small streams I caught Brook Trout and German Browns. There were Beaver dams back then also,so you could camp out at the Beaver pond and catch Brook Trout all day long if you wanted too.Once we rode horses down Dry creek and the three of us caught 6o german browns on a five mile stretch of creek.
The next fishing adventures were in California.I would go up through Fresno into Back country of the Sierra's on West side.I have caught Brook Trout,Rainbow,German Brown, and Coho Salmon in this country. Some of the lakes and streams were Huntington lake Shaver lake,Wishon lake,Courtright lake.Mallard lake, cliff lake,Camped a week at Strawberry lake and caught 50 Rainbows. There was still snow banks,so dug a hole in the snow and used it as a freezer until we left for home. ,Red lake,Devils bathtub almost straight down to the water,Duck lake, edison lake, florence, grouse lake,.Sample Meadow creek,Brown creek, bear creek, kaiser creek, dinkey creek, deer creek, goddard creek, woodchuck creek, tamarack creek, rock creek, san jouquin river to name a few.
On the East side of the Sierra's up around Mammoth Lake I fished at Convict lake,my favorite camping spot.Twin lakes,convict creek,cotton wood creek,mcgee creek,owens river,taboose creek,Tuttle creek,lundy creek.Independance Creek.
In Utah, I fished around Salt Lake City while working there for the Bureau of land management.
Oregon I mostly fished for Salmon or river run Steelhead out of Seaside and Astoria.
Montana i fish for Rainbow,Cutthroat,Brook Trout,Brown Trout on the Montana Idaho border where there are lots of lakes and streams.Fish all day and never see another peson. Now days I usually fly fish,as I get more enjoyment out of seeing a trout rise to the fly and bang the fight is on.Also tie my own flys,so that makes it more rewarding.
Trout Species
Food
Trout eat mostly bugs, such as mosquitoes, grasshoppers, nymphs, crustaceans, snails. They also eat fish eggs, worms, and other fish.\
Flys resembling mosquitoes are probably the most popular fish lure while fly fishing. You can also use spinners, usually a silver color will catch trout.Trolling with a spinner is another way to catch them, they think it is a fish and attack for a meal.I use grasshoppers in the summer time as they are near bodies of water in the tall grass. You toss one in the hole and if there is a trout there,he will strike immediately.Worms are probably the most used bait for trout, and I have caught my share on worms. You can also use a sinking fly such as a black woolyworm.Just let it bounce along the bottom of the stream and if trout are feeding they will pick it up and head for a hideout to eat it,but won't get far because the line will go tawt and you will take up slack and set the hook.Salmon eggs are widely used also,I really don't fish with eggs because they fall off the hook to easily and the fish get full on free food and will not bite after while. You can find nymphs under rocks that are in the water, just roll it over and there will be a couple to pick off for bait.

I'm headed to Branson in two weeks to do some trout fishing. You got me excited with this.
I have a brother in law, that owns some ground in south-west Wyoming, that has a stream called Willow Creek, this is feed from a spring. There is certain unique specie of golden trout there that exists no place else in the world. The whole stream is protected for catch and release only, but the fishing has gotten pretty good there.
Keep on Hubbing
The sheer beauty of the places in which you fish sound fantastic. And of course, what is better than fresh caught fish? Nothing! I have never gone fishing, but would certainly enjoy trying to do it in the places you describe. Fly fishing is beautiful to watch. I still remember with fondness the movie " A River Runs Through It."
Loved it!! I used to go fishing with my biological dad alot for Trout when I was just a kid...I always out fished him so he stopped taking me. I guess it was a blow to his ego since he was the famous fisherman in the family. he couldn't be beat by a nine year old girl!! But oh the fun we had. He used to take me up to some lakes up in Northern Ca Up past Silver lake in the sierras. A place called Blue Camas. And also at Bear River, Mokulumne River and Lake Comanche.... Good times! I have only caught German Browns and Rainbow Trout. GREAT HUB!!
