Best way to prevent bike thefts

As soon as I saw the request I immediately remembered the only bike I know which is really "thief-proof": the new Puma Glow Rider aka Biomega Boston.

The reason I called it "thief-proof" is because Puma Bike it is equipped with an integrated wire lock system which is also part of the bike structure (down tube of the frame) working as a tension cable and if anyone try to cut this wire the bike will fall apart and can not be ridden anymore. Well, at least until the legal owner presents a copy of the invoice and be able to get a new wire and be capable to ride it again.

Being a foldable bicycle it can be stored easily and safely using the wire cable through the wheels and frame.

Who had the idea?

Even though it is Puma who is marketing this concept right now, the idea was born at Denmark in one of the most innovative bicycle companies in the world - Biomega.

If we pick the four ideals of Biomega (Integration, Drivability, Durability and Visibility) and add them Urban Mobility we end up with the concept lauched by Puma.

The design of the bike was made by Jens Martin Skibsted who is perhaps the most inspiring and creative Danish designer. When he was designing this bicycle Jens tried to combine the BMX style with the features needed to make it functional and practical to urban utilization.

This Instant Icon, as Jens likes to call it, is now part of the permanent display at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

That´s not all...

Not happy with all the great features of this product, Puma decided to add another one: Visibility. How?

Painting the bike`s frame with this paint which collects the sunrays during the day and returns this light when it is dark. This glowing paint alows the bike to be better seen by the other vehicles on the road.

They are available in two colors, buttermilk and orange, which glows respectively in green and orange.

What a great bike! I'm just going to go and look it up to see if I can afford one.

Yeah, I checked out the Glow Rider earlier this year, it's a sweet bike!

@ CJStone - I'm pretty sure it is $450, maybe $550

Thanks for answering my request, Funride. Wow, the Puma is an awesome bike! I'm new to bicycling, and I'm amazed at all the cool products that are available. I have two young kids, and I need a bike that can carry all three of us. I'm still researching which type of child seat/trailer combination is best. Let me know if you have any recommendations. Great hub!

CJStone, I don´t want to ruin your party but I heard there were limited numbers made and that the price of a new one it´s almost $1000 higher than what Coach Levi said :( but you can always get it used at eBay for $530 ;)

Coach Levi, tahnks for stopping by. Those prices you refer to are for used bikes, right? (Est. retail price - $1200, courtesy of Puma).

Hi Shawna, I´m glad you enjoyed it. I was afraid this wasn´t what you were looking for. Have you seen the MyZigo http://www.myzigo.com/ ? It´s a nice way to take your little one for a ride and you can always attach a bicycle trailer for the older one http://www.babyride.com/sc250.html . Hope this can help your research ;)

LOL, Oh my dear G-Ma, sorry for that one. I should have warn you that it was just a test to see if people would do something when someone was trying to steal a bike. But it´s trully sad to see that people don´t get involved and when they do it´s only to help the thief :(

That is one cool bike. Anything that cuts down on bicycle theft is great.

Hi UW, thanks for commenting. I must admit I didn´t like the bike the first time I saw it but now I believe it will mark the bicycle history and its design will inspire many other. For those riding on big cities Puma it´s indeed the best choice to avoid bike theft.

Wow, Funride...The myZigo is AWESOME!  Just another product I never knew existed.  I love how the "trailer" is in the front and actually fastened to the bike. It seems safer than a traditional trailer. If only I had $1300 bucks to blow on a bike!  I'll add it to my Christmas list ;)  Thanks for the info.

I´m glad you loved it and I hope Santa will know how well behaved you have been this year and leave you a brand new myZigo for Christmas :D

Hi Glory, thanks ;)

I didn´t say it was thief-proof. I said it´s "thief-proof" :p lol

But if we think that it can not be ridden after someone have cut the wire it´s believable that the thief would probably left it behind and search for an easy one to steal.

Nice bike! I was hoping it has some sort of low-voltage electricity surrounding it that would electrocute the thief, just a bit. ;)

LOL, that´s a good one and I bet they would consider to add that feature if you would gave them the idea :D

Thanks for passing by ;)

I am not proud and have payed the price for stealing many many bicycles in my time and my first criminal convixction (aged 10) was for stealing a bike! and this bike looks pretty cool!!

Just a tip...I would never recommend anyone using cabled locks unless extremely thick as they can easily be removed by using just a piece of wood or thick stick, bar.. How to break the lock is done by keep twisting the cable with tool, until it breaks!! no need for cable cutters or anything so be careful!!

I don't like the electrocute the thief tip above as if this was the case, i would not be giving you my tip now!! lol

I´m glad you were not electrocuted back then when you were a bad boy compu-smart lol. Your presence here as well as your tips are priceless, thanks for stopping by ;)

You should get some kind of bicycle lock to avoid any theft attempt but don´t do as this guy did: http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr76/tfluci/bic LOL.

Thanks for passing by Michelle, I hope you are having fun with your bicycle ;)
