Chinese Traditional Wedding

I guess most of you have already seen that funny wedding video on youtube. The bridesmaids and groomsman danced to walk through the aisle with the pop music on.

Last weekend I attended my old colleague Tina's wedding, and they did the same kind of thing. Many young friends on site like me thought it was really fun and creative idea. However, some senior people seemed more like the traditional way.

Here I would like to introduce you some Chinese wedding traditions.

1. Hair-dressing and Make-up ritual for bride

In the early morning of the wedding day, "hair dressing and make-up" ritual is performed for the bride. Bride usually needs to get up very early on that day, can be 4 or 5am to perform the ritual. A "good luck woman", woman with living parents, spouse and children, will come to help dressing up the bride's hair. The woman should also speak auspicious words while tying up her hair in a bun, a style of married woman.

2. Chinese wedding Door Games

Door game originated from ancient time which implies that the bride is a lovely girl and her family and friends do not want to marry her away. The groom will be blocked out of the bride's door, and her friends will try to stop him from entering by asking questions about the bride, or try to challenge him to do something. It is a way to test if he really cares about her. They may also do other tricks to delay the bride's leaving. The groom will try to buy his way in by presenting "hong bao", token money wrapped in red envelopes. The entire "bargain" process is joyous and good-natured.

There are many many door games you can play. At Tina's wedding, we let the groom and groomsmen did a lot of push-ups on the floor outside of the door. And we let the groom sang a very funny song and dance at the same time, because we knew the groom hated singing most and he never sang in public. So it was a huge challenge to him, but very funny we enjoyed it:) Even after the groom entered the door, the game had not finished yet. We had hiden the bride's shoes somewhere to let the groom find out. One shoe was hiden in massive of towels in a high shelf in bathroom, the other one was in bride's massive wedding expansion skirt. As you guess the second shoe is really hard to find out, no one would think it can be under the dress and beside her feet, which is the last place they can think of. Of course we had to give some hint to the all of sweat groom, otherwise it will miss their best time:)

3. Tea Ceremony

At traditional Chinese weddings, Tea Ceremony is an equivalent of exchange of vows at a western wedding ceremony. This official ritual is still widely practiced at modern Chinese weddings on the wedding day, either at home or at the reception.

Tea Ceremony is an official ritual to introduce the newlyweds to each other's family, and it's a way for newlyweds to show respect and appreciation to their parents. The newlyweds kneel in front of their parents, serving tea to both side of parents, as well as elder close relatives. Parents give their words of blessing and gifts to the newlyweds. During tea presentation, a "Good Luck Woman" would say auspicious phrases to bless the newlyweds and the parents. These auspicious words of blessing are almost a lost art nowadays, that are designed to bless and amuse the family and make the occasion filled with fun and joy.
