The haunted camp
56The haunting
Well, those who have become my fans know by now that I am a cook. I started out in fast food and from there have had some unique jobs. But by far the last 4 summers have been the most intertaining by far.
To begin this story I must tell you that during my lifetime I have been had a few oddities that made me wonder if maybe I was sensitive to things other people really weren't sensitive to. But then I found another family member had some of the same encounters but not as many so I think it could be passed from generation to generation.
In the summer of 2003 I went to work at a forestry camp, that a local university holds forestry and wild life classes at. It is a 2 month job, that requires you to live there in a cabin. The cabins and buildings are old, mainly 1920 eras and the mess hall is vintage 1920,including the trays the students eat off of. But because it is not open to the public all the time it is quiet and serene and in its pristine beauty not polluted and not ruined by being well travelled.
The first summer I went there I was so amazed at the history that was tucked away, (maybe that will be another story)and I was interested in the very old cemetary that was on the property. The headstones were very old and I found it quite odd that on the headstone it said son or daughter of (the fathers name) or wife of the husbands name. It never said anything about the mother.but don't let me mislead you it did have the deceased ones name on it. The old headstones were forgotten leaves were all over the graves and some of them were crumbling and some were very well preserved. Also nearby was an old slaves cemetary but I did not get the opportunity to see it.But Maybe one day I will. The cemetaries were not a part of the camp, but were on the property that was deeded to the camp.
The camp cook(me) has to get up early to prepare coffee and breakfast, and is usually the only one up. The old fashioned perculator takes quite a while to brew and I guess because of its age it moans and groans. The pots and pans have got to be antiques as well because the are so heavy. If you hit someone with the fry pan it would surely kill them dead.
Well, that was the prelude to what I am going to tell you, and here is the story that follows.
It was an unusually hot and humid day. The air seemed as if it could not move I wondered if it was because of the trees. There are so many of them. I cooked for the students and retired to my cabin. Which is just afew feet from the mess hall. The students were going on a feild trip and they would not be back until 9 or 10 pm. My cabin is just the basic neccesities I had a t.v. no cable. A terrible storm came up. The wind blew and lightning lit the sky every few mminutes. The thunder rumbled and as it got closer the wind seemed to rage. The trees creaked and goaned as their heavy boughs were tossed and some branches were lost as they crashed to the ground. Then the lights went out. I turned on my flash lights to give light in the cabin and wished for the students to return. As the storm died down I went to the door to see if there was alot of damage. As I looked toward the mess hall I saw a yellow light that appeared to be blinking. I thought it was maybe the power company because they have yellow lights on top of their trucks. So since the storm had died down to a pitter patter of rain. I put on my jacket and ran to the mess hall. I looked out the window to see where the light was coming from and there was no truck or light out their. But to my horror I could see the reflection of the light in the window which meant that it was behind me. As I slowly turned around I looked up(remember there is no electricity the power is out) there is a yellow ball of light running back and forth in the flourecent light fixture. I stood their a few seconds and watched it run back and forth and then I decided I would run back to my cabin. The light was eerie and I was scared of it.
A few days after that, I had got up early and had cooked breakfast, but the students were apparently sleeping in so I pulled my chair to the back door so I could hear the early morning bird songs and enjoy the morning cool breeze. As I sat there thinking of what I was going to prepare for lunch. I saw a man from the corner of my eye run from one cabin to another, when I turned my head he was gone. I chuckled and though to myself well it is just nerves or something. The next morning I saw him again and so went the summer.I never got a direct look but by the end of summer I knew he had on navy trousers, a dingy white shirt he had dark hair and he always went between the same two cabins. It was apparent he was doing his usual task(whatever that was) at the same time every day.It was also apparent he had no interst in me either. The people I told about this just sort of looked at me like I was crazy or I watched to much t.v. and for the last 3 years The man has done the same thing at the same time every morning I was there. So I didn't pay much attention and just put it off to my wild immagination until this year.
This year one of the students came to me and told me that I needed to get a new micro wave that the one I had was dangerous. I looked at him and said why?, I used it this morning and it was ok.He told me he had used it last night and a blue light had shot out of it when he opened the door and it had scared him and his buddy to death.(the microwave worked fine for me all summer) but the boy would not use it any more. A day or to later, as the students came in for breakfast they were talking and the same boy had had an encounter with something in his room, so I asked him what he thought it was and he said its not a something it is someone. Someone was in the cabin at 330 this morning. The other students were laughing thinking it was funny. Well as you can imagine they thought he was crazy. So, every day I would ask him if he saw anything and he woud say no. But about 3 weeks later he jumped up out of bed screaaming and scaring his cabin mates to death be cause a man had walked into the cabin and dissappeared in the corner.(remember these are college students not little kids). So now I wonder......Just who is haunting the camp and why? Are they looking for something? or someone?
