The rise and crash of one Susan Boyle
68Did we do her a favor ??
As Susan Boyle stood at the mic, acting somewhat shy and goofy, Simon and the other judges on "England's got talent", rolled their eyes and groaned. How dare this less than beautiful person, invade the territory of the talented and pretty people. They reluctantly gave her 2 minutes or so, and braced for the worst, hoping they would atleast garnish a laugh at Susan's expense, and maybe have an outbite for an ad from it.
Then something unexpected happened. Susan Boyle opened her mouth, and out poured the song of a lark. As she continued , it became obvious that she was not only "not a joke" , but that she was quite good. It seems as though people find it infathomable that God should wrap such a talented gift, in such a plain unattractive package.
Susan Boyle mania, sweeps not only England, but the world. Her less than astetic face is everywhere. Pictures on the internet of Susan in her 20's etc. A simple woman, who didn't seem extremly bright, is now being hyped by the media machine as the next Striesand.
Truthfully, Susan Boyle is talented. She, however is not SO talented that , if not for her homely exterior, she would be pasted over the media world's wall.
I think the world both insulted and exploited Susan. Susan believes she can sing .She can. Susan believes all the interest in her is due to her voice. That is only true in part. They have made her a novelty act, and a poster child for all the poor ,unseemly, down on there luck characters everywhere. But Susan...Simple in her ways, and unaware of the"joke " part of the act... continues on her plight, as innocent and vulnerable, as Harper Lee's mockingbird.
Perhaps we should title the act "To kill a nightinggale" Today, after the "shock of finishing 2nd(after almost 50 years of obscurity)Susan Boyle had a nervous breakdown. As of this writing, she is in the hospital, and not much else is known.
The world we live in is strange. It rewards when it shouldnt...It punishes when it shouldnt A straight A student is ostrisized as an outcast, while the kid who sells pot is regarded as "cool"... I guesss that is nothing new, but with the internet and mass media, the peer presure effect is multiplied.
Had Susan been merely accepted on the TV show, like other contestants, maybe things would have been different. The fact so much was made of an ugly person singing, to me seems absurd.
I feel bad for Susan. I feel she is a victim of something she dosent even understand. This is like a "Flowers for Algernon" Story. The Camera stops rolling... The internet hits diminish... stardom leaves as quickly as it came....The media looks for their next victim... and poor Susan Boyle is left in a mental hospital..alone..to pick up the pieces to what was once a simple, yet managable exsistence.
Best of luck Susan..And here is to hoping Simon et al didnt destroy your whole life for a few bucks, and furtherment of their ventures!I

Well, Mike, Susan will recover. With so much attention, after almost 50 years of no attention at all, after so much exitment and high levels of adrenalin - this crisis is very natural. When adrenalin drops down, this shock very often occurs. She just needs rest and pampering...and a lot of sleep....
Many regards, I hope you are well.
Lucky nix..good point! The kid with the pierced lip is sometimes one and the same with the A student..That was a bad example..I am going to edit that. Thanks for reading! Tat How are ya?? Hope you are well..... miss talking to ya!
This is the first I've heard of Susan Boyle. I just watched the YouTube of Susan singing "I Dreamed a Dream". What a treat!
I'm a big American Idol fan but usually turn off the tv when I'm done watching what i want to watch. I always figure if there is something important or special i need to know someone will let me know and you did, hehe!
Thanks, Dotster!
Oh, I believe that Susan will have a nice career. I will certainly buy a record that she makes and I don't normally buy music like that. I will admit, I was struck by the underdog making good theme of the story. I have watched her first video over and over. It just gives me a wonderful feeling and makes me think that all things are possible. Silly and sentimental, I'm sure, but I believe that is her appeal. I wish Susan all the best and pray for her speedy recovery.
Thanks Mike, I am OK....He, he, I did not disappear from HP, you can always talk to me...what is new ?
Hi Mike, sometimes I wonder too...I thope she will be well after all the excitement and everything! Life has a way of speaking to each one of us as I am sure it did to Susan too!
Sorry to say this, Mike the salesman, but its opinions like you voiced in your hub that makes it tough for anyone who is not a drop dead knockout to be accepted. Why does the world have to revolve just around looks. Susan Boyle can sing, has a great voice why not leave it at that.
Just my 2 cents worth
regards Zsuzsy
Oh, I so agree with you! I think you misunderstood my point. We should embrace people with talent, instead of marketing them ..like the ugly girl who can sing.. just someone who has enormous musical talent... Abe Lincoln could not be elected today..awkward speech..not nice looking..and what a shame that would have been! No, I don't argue with Ms. Boyles being recognized.. just the fact they minimalized her by making her a freak act, rather than an awesome talent
Ripplemaker: I always love your insight and sensitivity!

It is sad that the world celebrates this as such a "miracle." Both fortunate and unfortunate for her, yes. A more disgusting reflection on our shallow society. Who are we to establish what beauty should be packaged in?
May I be so bold as to offer a tangent comment? The straight A student may often have a pierced lip as well. We have to be careful not to judge based on preconceived stereotypes. If Susan Boyle really gave the world any gift, it was the examanition of that fact.
Nicely written senor...
