The secret weapon of the new group Fiat-Chrysler
65The key role that Alfredo Altavilla, the CEO of Fiat Powertrain
Technologies by many the emerging manager of the Lingotto, has been -
and will probably also have in the process of implementation of the
agreements - the long and complex negotiations leded to the specific in
strategic group Chrysler it says a lot about the levers that Marchionne
and his men have used to persuade the president Obama to have in front really the mens who are capable of the saving of the third car-group in US.
Because it
is in the research laboratories in Turin FPT that one can find the answer to
many problems of the newly allied: Fiat not
only brings a dowry into the solid and recognized experience in the
field of small-medium car sober and savings - that Americans have never
wanted or been able to do either - or re-license the manufacturer,
which in Europe has the range with the lowest average level of
emissions.
Obama said he would belive in "green" business and will applies even to the motor vehicle, the ideal catalyst to overcome the crisis, Marchionne brought the third revolution of the engine by the Lingotto, after the first idea of the diesel common rail - unfortunately sold for Bosch engineering and industrialization - and the Multijet: the new entry that can guarantee a serene future in Turin and in Auburn Hills is called: MULTIAIR®,it was officially presented two months ago at the Geneva Motor Show and is now ready to trade off that will happen within the year with a 1.4 petrol and turbo inlet, it's intended to be used on the Alfa Mito and the Fiat Grande Punto, which will be followed to the expected short 2 cylinder 900 cc aspirated, turbo and bi-fuel petrol and methane that promises to get to the CO2 emissions in the order of 80 g / km.
I belive they are too small engines for the needs and American habits, but
the real secret of the MULTIAIR® - technology that uses an
electro-hydraulic system operating the valves to control dynamic,
direct and timely (ie, cylinder to cylinder) and the combustion air -
is its extreme flexibility of use.
As Rinaldo Rinolfi,
Vice-President responsible for Research & FPT technology, capable
manager so shy he can be seen as sort of "father" of the new engines,
the Multiair can be applied to motors of higher engine capacity, such as the one loved to U.S. customers without losing a point of its potential,
summed up in some very significant figures: increased power by 10%
compared to a similar conventional engine design, improvement of 15% of
torque at low speed, eliminating pumping losses with reduction of
consumption and emissions by 10%, but can be increased to 25% even if
the technology is MULTIAIR® matches the philosophy of downsizing, based on
engine displacement smaller implemented through the use of the turbo,
reducing emissions up to 40% in case of unburned hydrocarbons (HC) and
carbon monoxide (CO) and up to 60% for oxides of nitrogen (NOx).
Not to mention that the system can be used retrospectively on existing
engines, and is potentially suitable for diesel. But this, in
"key-Obama, at least for now is a minor having regard to the coolness
with which the Americans continue to look to diesel propulsion.
Up to this point, it seems a one way mission, with the Lingotto to give
- to be considered the proven ability to Sergio Marchionne in
revitalizing companies on the brink of the precipice - and the U.S.
allies in receiving, thanking, technology, managerial skills ,
innovative ideas. In fact, you can also glimpse Fiat for some
interesting technological opportunities, in addition to those already
declared policy: to achieve the famous critical mass, capacity and
acquire a distribution network firmly rooted and widespread.
The Lingotto could watch with interest, for example, the four-wheel drive technology which is the flagship of the Jeep brand, and that it could prove useful in a europian market where to run - in addition to small and simple city car - are only Suv compact. And since there is a Torino chapter yet to be written - the future of the Lancia and Alfa admiral - maybe it can be in the 'arsenal' of the American partner consumers could be ready platform suitable for some needs. Maybe, but let engineers last word, that anything but contemptible Chrysler 300C, aggressive sedan (and station wagon) that even on our side of the Atlantic was a success

mr. Obama know what is doing! We need a real "green" business
Mr. Rubenoff you are richt! this is a patent that is certainly a transition to the clean engine, but it is very good because it is feasible and it can be used now on a wide range of engines
How many Fiats do you think there are in the US
I don't know how many Fiat there are in US.
I do not understand the question
Thanks for sharing all this information.
Thanks

This is fascinating! I think that ultimately internal combustion may have to go, but if in the mean time we can decrease emissions by 40 to 60 percent - the news should be shouted from the rooftops.
