A lot of you may have heard about unschooling and not know what it is. You probably understand that this is a method homeschooling and may have even figured out that this learning style is not set in stone. This is all true. Unschooling does mean different things to different people and it is what many families prefer to use as a homeschooling style.

What you may not know is that unschooling is a natural learning method that is mainly based upon the life experiences that daily living provides. With this in mind, you can clearly see that this method of homeschooling is not based upon choosing a traditional curriculum and then using traditional teaching methods for children to learn what is in their textbook. In fact, there is very little emphasis placed upon such things as textbooks, quizzes and scheduled subjects or class times.

Now take a moment to think back to your school days. What is it that you remember about this time in your life? Did the things you learned stimulate you to want to learn more? Were you bored with what the teacher was teaching? Did you think that it was fun to learn?

It only stands to reason that the majority of children and adults learn at a much faster pace whenever subjects are presented to them in an enjoyable manner. They also tend to retain the information a lot longer whenever they are truly interested in what they are learning. Simply put: Learning should be fun.

The reason why a lot of homeschooling parents find unschooling so appealing is because it is not an exact science. Of course, there is also a reason why unschooling is so appealing to children. The reason being that these children are provided with opportunities to learn about things that they would not otherwise have the opportunity to learn about if they were to be in your local public school classroom. For instance, if you have an 8-year-old who has expressed their interest in learning about something such as Japanese, astronomy or genealogy. More than likely your child will not be able to learn about any of these things if they are in a conventional public school setting.

While unschooling has very few rules and a lot of different definitions, there have been a couple of great books written about this method of homeschooling. It is recommended that you take some time to read some of these books if you are new to the concept of unschooling and think that it might work for your family. You will be surprised at just how much information is available on this topic.

Another great thing to do is take some time to join a local homeschool group and take part in the various discussion forums that exist online. This will help you to make contact with a lot of homeschooling families who are successfully unschooling their children. More than likely these people will be willing to answer your questions and steer you in the right direction if you are just beginning your journey. These people will be able to recommend books, online resources and other things that will be of great help to you.

Above all, if you choose to unschool, then you need to remember that unschooling is the natural way in which to teach your children. This is the way that learning becomes fun. While it may be a little scary at first, you will be amazed at the way your children progress and how much they will learn.
