The Golden Thread of Divinity Part One

The Personal and Human Touch
And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat so that it was already filling. But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing? Then He arose and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Peace, Be Still." And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. But He said to them, "Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?" And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, "Who can this be, that even the wind and sea obey Him?" Mark 4:37-41
In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus' ministry is so beautifully illustrated that the reader can gain a strong sense of oneness with this gentle healer, who touched lives and entered into the hearts of those who met Him in their moment of crisis. His compassion for the scattered souls (Mark 6:34) and the hungry (8:2) is written tenderly upon our hearts as we read how he fed the multitudes. We can almost reach out and touch His robe with the woman who had an issue of blood for twelve years, and shiver with awe as we look on in that moment of inner restoration (5:25-29). Jesus' passion for his Father's house compels us (11:15-18) and we long to follow after Him with that same zeal, but recoil in fear as we agonize with Him in the garden over the cost of of doing the Father's will (14:34-35).
In this expressive account of the Gospel, Mark presents to us a very personal Jesus, whom we can easily relate to with our senses. He employs imagery that is so strong that we can picture the shadowy silhouettes that looked like trees to the blind man after Jesus touched Him the first time (8:22-24). We can virtually taste the salt as Jesus illustrates how we are to affect the world (9:50), and in the account of His crucifixion, Mark appeals to our sense of smell considering the stench of the sour wine that was offered to our Savior (15:35).
Mark has woven together a masterpiece collection on the life of Jesus using threads that have come from human experience, however this book is not without the golden thread of divinity. It runs through the fabric of this Gospel. It is the thread that binds the work of Jesus with the Father in Heaven - a supernatural thread that forms the seam binding together a God who is fully man and a man who is fully God. The thread of divinity can't be missed.
A.T. Robertson states, "If one will take out of Mark's Gospel all the miracles wrought by Jesus and every mention of the miraculous or the supernatural, he will have on a mutilated fragment. When the miraculous is removed, only a bare skeleton remains."
There is no doubt that without the thread of divinity this Gospel would only be an account of a man who was able to relate to people and aid them in their suffering. As we will see in part two, Jesus is so much more.

Mark 4:37-41 gives us a picture of Jesus' humanity "asleep on a pillow" hid in his divinity "Who can this be, that even the wind and sea obey Him?" This was the beauty of Mark's gospel. We witness the miraculous overcome the mundane in a series of epiphanies revealing who Jesus really is.
