The Best PDA Phone

Researching the best pda phones on the market

I've done the research and lived with the Palm Treo 600 and 650.  Never again.  I narrowed my choice down to three of the best PDA phones I could find on the market and selected one available from Cingular, Verizon, and T-Mobile.  I could have added a fourth from Sprint, but didn't find anything that screamed at me.

Motorola Q

Q by Motorola

The Motorola Q is my first choice.  I live in the Bay area and it's the gotta have phone, despite it's lack of using the bluetooth connectivity as a modem and its total disrespect for wifi.  I get not supporting modem like connectivity.  Who needs it when you have email and a browser built into the phone?  I don't.  But, the wifi thing gets me.  Presence technologies are exploding and I should be able to access wifi so I can seamlessly drift from networks. I heard they didn't add wifi because of the extra battery drain, so at least they were thinking about it.  It also comes with 1.3 megapixel camera which completes my requirements for a PDA phone.

Update:Motorola Q is horrible

Blackberry 8700C From Cingular

The Blackberry 8700

I've never owned a Blackberry, but I know people that swear by them.  They tend to be heavy SMS users or addicted to email.  Some people describe this as a business person's phone since it doesn't have a camera.  What?  That's right.  I can't go for it for this simple lack.  I don't care about the other apps, but I have to have a camera just so I can take pictures for my Hubs.  It's email features are its trump card.  You can receive email from up to 10 accounts on Cingular.   And it comes with bluetooth support.  I'd try it if it weren't for that darn camera.

SDA Smart Phone From T Mobile

SDA Smart Phone

In technology, smaller can cost more, but not with this smart phone.  It's the least expensive of the phones I'm thinking of trying.  I like it for it's size.  It will fit in my pocket comfortably.  It has a 1.3 megapixel camera, bluetooth, speakerphone, wifi, and Outlook support for email.  Everything I need.   So what's holding me back?  It's the keyboard size.  You can't have it both ways I guess, but I type a lot of emails on my pda phone.  If I were light on doing email on my phone, I'd go for this cell phone.

I agree, the blackberry should have a camera. I have an 8700 and really like it otherwise, the download speed for web pages is much better than earlier models I've had.

What about sound quality, I have a nokia...the software is not as good as with the Palm or Treo, but the sound quality and the camera quality are far superior.

The sound quality is pretty poor on the Treo 650. I have a lot of difficulty hearing people unless I am indoors and there is no background noise.

- T-Mobile has the MDA and Cingular has the 8125.
- The Cingular 2125 is like the T-Mobile 2125 but without WiFi, although it has a better keypad.

I really like the Sony Ericsson phones...(W600i, W810, W710). If your goal is to have a PFMR device (Phone-First, Mostly-Read) with a lot of great features, solid durability, ease of use, and is comfortable to hold in hand, you really should check these out too. The calendars are solid enough and the contacts sync well with Outlook. The Walkman player and FM radio make for good entertainment.

While I agree that a 1-2MP camera is nice, in many DOD and corporate environments - the main target for Blackberry devices - cameras are completely forbidden. Any small device with a built-in camera cannot be considered for enterprise use.

Sad, but true.

Rimm has other models designed for personal use - I think the Pearl is one. Actually, for a PDA I have no interest in phone capabilities. I have a phone. It works very simply and lasts 15+ days on a charge which makes it excellent for overseas travel.

It is a pity about camera or lack of for blackberry, this and lack of tethering solutions also takes it of my list

I have to say the BlackBerry has been the best pda I have ever used. Most reliable and business focused.

Time to update this hub. The AT&T tilt is king of the 'bulky' smartphones now. And the Samsung 'blackjack II' would be my choice for a slim phone. Nice work, though.
