The Chihuahuan Desert is one of the biologically richest deserts in the world . It has been classified by WWF as a Global 200 ecoregion both for its terrestrial and freshwater importance. Its lakes, springs, rivers and streams are home to a spectacular array of freshwater species. Its forests of cacti and its oases contain many endemic species such as the aquatic-desert turtle.
One of the most important biogeographic zones in North America covers all of the eastern part of the state of Chihuahua, from where it takes its name. It also covers great extensions of the neighboring states of Coahuila, Durango, New Mexico and Texas. However, is in Chihuahua where this desert shows the characteristics of flora and fauna the have made it famous around the world. 250 kilometers of highways run through the purest visions of desert lanscape: enormous prairies of pristine horizon, tinted every now and then by small calcareous sierras. This space, although predominantly arid is one of great beauty, and it is quite an experience to camp in its huge boundaries and find oneself immerse in a world of yuccas, lechuguillas and mesquites and being able to lost consciousness in the deep starry skyline.
Visiting this region that sires the Rio Conchos one sees the ancient testimonies that talk about a prehistoric ocean, extraordinary caves, majestic gorges and massive boulders that rise in rebellious postures that only a living desert can hold.
The flora and fauna that inhabit this lands, much of it endemic, turn the visit to this sanctuary in an experience worthy of remembrance.
