The Fastest Corvette Ever

Such a statement is sure to evoke some kind of reaction. Those familiar with Corvettes and their history might react with incredulity, or even disbelief. Even those unfamiliar with the vehicle sometimes referred to as the "only American sports car" are certain to be impressed. The name Corvette has always carried a mystique of speed and power. It is a vehicle that makes a statement, whether it is cruising along a highway or parked alongside a city street. This year, however, the Corvette mystique, like a ghost solidifying from the ethereal to the physical, has become the Corvette reality. It is the new 2007 Corvette Z06.

Since its introduction in 1963, the Z06 Corvette has always enhanced what was already a formidable vehicle, but this model is far different, amplifying the capabilities of a very advanced performance automobile to levels that invite favorable comparisons to Ferrari and Lamborghini sports cars.

Give me the numbers

The new Z06 wears its impressive capabilities like a suit of ceremonial armor: 505 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque from a 7.0-liter 427 cubic inch aluminum plant. The new Corvette Z06 can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds. The Z06 was designed with the knowledge gained from the Corvette racing program, which has achieved more than 50 victories in the last seven years, notably at Le Mans. The new Corvette is constructed with each part justified by its contribution to overall performance. Its frame and body are made of lightweight carbon composites and aluminum, materials normally only found in far more expensive alternatives, while its engine is hand-built and mounted on magnesium supports. There are a variety of unique and extraordinary engineering innovations built in to the new Z06 engine that gives it superior efficiency while limiting weight.

Although this is a vehicle that yearns for a track instead of a lane, it is nonetheless comfortable to drive, and includes quite a bit more cargo capacity than most would expect from a performance car.

Not a muscle car... THE muscle car.

Since its introduction, the Corvette has always been the most self-assured "muscle car" manufactured by American automakers. It is a vehicle with one identity and one purpose, unlike many other vehicles designed during the same era. So many other cars, despite the fact they had roughly the same engine, power and potential, found themselves balancing many roles as drivers looked for practical transportation in addition to performance transportation.

Many of the cars manufactured in the late 1950s and 1960s had engines just as large and just as powerful as any Corvette, but none had the mystique and identity. None could credibly wear the title "sports car."

Looking far into the wake as the Corvette Z06 passes, one can almost see glimpses of a fifty year legacy of speed and power. Stingray. C5. Blue Flame. Z06. Not ghosts, but yet not contemporary. As the new Corvette accelerates into the fast lane, it carries their mystique and their tradition with it, and it does so both proudly and with style.
