A Quick Guide To The Cross Hand Golf Swing

For beginner and recreational golfers, putting can be a source of frustration and confusion. What many golfers don't initially understand about putting is that, like driving, the grip plays a large factor in how the putt is carried through. Many golfers, from professional-level players on down, have solved many of their putting problems by implementing the cross hand golf swing.

The cross hand golf swing for putting has several advantages. The most obvious one is that it allows the golfer to align his shoulders in a manner that is squared more fully to the target. The left shoulder is moved out; making it square up, once the left hand is moved lower down the grip. This enables the golfer to putt solidly because his stance locks him on the ball, allowing him to putt straighter.

However, as accurate as this style of putting can be, it is essentially most valid for shorter putts, up to about ten feet, on a flat green. The reason that most players do not putt with a cross handed grip is because the feel of the putter is lost when the left hand is much lower. When looking at a longer distance putt that goes through varying terrain, it is imperative to have that level of feel in order to better drive the ball to the hole.

That being said, there are certain times when a cross handed golf putt will serve you quite well. In order to obtain the most value from your cross handed putting, your best bet is to simply practice.

In order to execute a cross hand golf putt successfully, try these simple tips.

- Use your right hand to initially line your putter up to the target.

- Now place your left hand on the club with your left pinky finger resting directly on top of the index finger on your right hand.

- Strike the putt firmly. Your bottom (left) hand will lead the putt with your left arm and left shoulder so this should feel odd as opposed to your right hand, arm, and shoulder leading. If you think of the entire top of your body as a kind of pendulum throughout the execution it will be more precise.
