The Shih Tzu, hardy and intelligent

And sometimes a little self centered!

The Shih Tzu's small size is often mistaken for a breed that is shy or complacent. Nothing could be further from the truth in this particular breed! Shih Tzus have a strong sense of self and can act extremely self-centered, even to the point of arrogance. This is one of the things that can be hilarious at one moment and maddening at the next.

People often describe the Shih-Tzu as "undoglike." They have been compared to a spoiled child, and this is not matter how the owner has tried to train or teach them. This breed is not one to take home without doing some serious research. Talk to someone in your area who owns Shih-Tzus and has a lot of experience with them before you make a decision.

They are overall a very hardy breed, lively, intelligent, and of good temper. It is one of the oldest Toy breeds. The name means "Lion Dog" in Chinese, but it was given this name because it resembled the lion as shown in Chinese art, not because of its personality.

It is an excellent companion dog and was the favorite house pet in the Manchu Dynasty. The Shih Tzu is full of oil glands which keep the dog's skin soft, and makes the coat repel water. They do not have to be bathed very often, and as a matter of fact, too frequent shampooing will greatly interfere with the dog's natural ability to have healthy skin and fur and may result in a dry coat and abnormal shedding.

The Shih Tzu reaches full size around ten months old. It is also when the dog reaches sexual maturity. Its actions will be bolder and more assertive at this point, and it may begin to test the system. This is when you will see if your training, which you must begin by the age of four months, has been effective.

By one year your Shih Tzu will want to be included in all activities. It is a full member of your family, and if you have trained it properly, it will know exactly what to do. This is an extremely intelligent breed and you can count on its behavior to remain consistent - as long as yours does! As always, stay in authority, be the alpha dog. Your dog needs that consistency so that it knows where its place resides in the family.

If you are adopting an adult Shih Tzu, most of them will adapt easily to a new environment. They are an ideal pet for the elderly or for anyone who would not be able to handle a puppy. However, if the dog has developed any bad habits, it will be extremely difficult to reverse them.

Be sure to get your Shih Tzu from a reputable breeder. These dogs are very popular and you do not want to make the mistake of a poorly bred dog. Visit several breeders and make sure you obtain a very healthy well-bred Shih Tzu. Anything less will be a very disappointing experience.

Shih Tzus are loyal and affectionate, and will offer their human companions a long life of fun.

Hi Suzanna, I agree with everything you said in here. I adopted my Shih Tzu, Murphy, when he was already two years old. Though he fit into our household quite easily, we still have slight problems with "accidents" or separation anxiety. But of course all the great things outweigh any issues we may have--Murphy is definitely a "full member" of our family and I cannot imagine walking around the house without this loyal Shih Tzu staying close to my side at ALL times. Thanks for putting up some info about one of our favorite breeds. =) Check out my hub at:

Thank you so much for this article. We are on our second shih tzu and I would never get any other breed. Our first Holly, was from breeder and was an angel but had a heart condition. Our second Sasha was rescued from a shelter and is not quite an angel but we love her and I know she loves us.
