"Lane Meyer, the kid from Green Bay..."
Only this movie can make Neil Sedaka funny
Two dollars. Cash.
For a movie that was made on a limited budget, pound for pound, the Savage Steve Holland classic Better off Dead is also one of the funniest movies on our list. Starring John Cusack as an overwrought teenager attempting to overcome the loss of his "girlfriend Beth," Better Off Dead is crammed to the edges and ceiling with hilariously well-written and brilliantly sarcastic comedy.
Anyone who has seen this film can quote at least one funny line from it. From the Howard Cosell race announcer brothers to the militant paperboy, this film is also almost perfectly cast.
One of the things that makes Better Off Dead so entertaining is its depth. There are often at least three running jokes going at the same time, and for people who have never seen the movie before, they are almost certain to miss at least half of them the first time they watch it.
The gags continue into the credits, and one gets the impression if they didn't turn off the camera, the jokes just wouldn't ever stop.
