San Antonio Theaters

There are a lot of San Antonio theaters, both for movies and for plays and concerts. The most beautiful and popular is the Majestic Theatre. Check ahead to see if something you are interested in will be there during your visit to San Antonio. If so, buy your tickets in advance online. Tickets for Majestic Theatre events sell out quickly.

The Alamo Street Restaurant And Theatre was once a lovely church in the King William District.

The Arneson River Theatre is an amphitheater on the San Antonio River. I wrote about it in another hub. Many plays and ballets are put on in the Cockrell Theatre in downtown San Antonio.

The Carver Community Cultural Center sponsors visual and performing arts. Take the tour of this facility.

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center is dedicated to Hispanic arts.

The Harlequin Dinner Theater is located on Fort Sam Houston and the public is allowed.

The Josephine Theater hosts musicals each year. BRCC also has church services there each Sunday morning with contemporary worship bands and great Biblical preaching.

The Majik Children's Theater shows plays that the whole family will enjoy seeing.

See original plays, along with classic plays at the San Pedro Playhouse.

Gallery openings, lectures and concerts take place throughout the year at the Southwest School of Arts and Crafts.

A great place for children to see plays is at the Steven Stoli Playhouse And The Backyard Theater.

Movies

Of course, San Antonio theaters also include movie theaters. If you want to go to a movie but you don't want to spend a lot of money, visit Cinemark 16 on the Northwest side of town. I wrote another hub on it, also. My son works there and my oldest son worked there as a teenager. They have recently remodeled inside and it looks great. Seats are $1 on Tuesdays and $1.50 the rest of the time.

The nicest movie theater I have been to is the Palladium Theater. It is expensive and they even have a bar if you can't stay away from drinking for two hours at a time. Their food is also very expensive but it is a beautiful theater.

Santikos Silverado shows the latest movies and has a Starbucks.

Regal Cielo Vista is close to three new hotels on the Northwest side of San Antonio.

There are many others around town. You can check to see what movies are playing and the times here.

Go downtown to River Center Mall and see a movie at the IMAX Theater.

Majestic Theatre

There are a number of beautiful old theaters in San Antonio. The most famous is the Majestic Theatre. As you can see from the photo above, the outside of the Majestic Theatre is nothing special. But remember the old saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover?" Well, the same thing applies here. Do not judge a theater by its cover. This theater is incredibly beautiful and ornate on the inside.

As you can see from the marquees in the two photos above, this theater has fabulous shows throughout the year from concerts to Broadway shows. Dress up to go to a show at this theater because if you don't, you will feel underdressed. Everyone puts on their fanciest duds because of the elegance of the theater itself.

My daughter recently went to see performances of The Nutcracker and Phantom Of The Opera.

Inside the theater, the nighttime sky is depicted above. A machine projects and moves clouds across the sky. The walls are ornate and the seats are comfortable and the cloth is so pretty. The decor is called Mediterranean. There are three balconies, but one is not used at this time. It is hard to describe.

The Majestic Theatre was built in 1929 but "forever" closed its doors after low attendance in 1974. But, it was restored and reopened in 1989. Fabric for the seats and the carpeting were specially woven to match the originals. It is now a National Historic Landmark. It seats 2,311 people.

You will have a marvelous time. The only problem is parking. I suggest using a downtown parking lot. The fee will be around $10, but you will not have to worry about getting a parking ticket or about your vehicle being towed.

Go downtown early and have a nice dinner before your show. Visit the world famous River Walk and have a great time prior to your show. Enjoy the sights and sounds of downtown San Antonio.

The theater is located at 224 E. Houston Street. For information on shows coming in the future and for ticket prices, visit their web site listed above.

Imax Alamo River Center San Antonio

After your visit to The Alamo, be sure to visit the Imax Alamo River Center San Antonio and see the story of the Alamo unfold before your eyes in the movie, Alamo-The Price Of Freedom. This theater used to be conveniently located directly across the street from The Alamo. Not anymore, as I found out yesterday, November 29, 2008, much to my surprise. It is now located on the street level of River Center Mall in downtown San Antonio, Texas.

I looked all over the place for it, knowing I had been there before, but it was just not there. It was not until we hit River Center Mall that we located it! Yes, the IMAX moved and no one told us. Personally, I think the old location was better since it was directly across the street from the Alamo, but this is convenient if you are shopping in River Center Mall. When I go downtown, I park at River Center Mall and then walk all over the place. Bring comfortable walking shoes!

You will experience this great story on a screen six stories high, with great sound.

This is a realistic film with some violence in it so it may not be right for your little ones. Your tweens and teens will love it, especially those who love action/adventure. It really makes the Alamo that you just visited come alive. Imagine being able to make a piece of history come alive for your kids and for yourself like that. It is well worth the time and money to see this movie.

Admission is $10 per adult, $9 per senior. Youth, ages 12 to 17 also costs $9 per person. Children, ages 3 to 11 get in for $6.75. Under the age of 3, free admission.

The first showing of the day is between 8:30 and 9am, depending on the time of year. The movie shows all day long, with the last showing at 9:45pm.

Imax Alamo River Center San Antonio is located on the top floor of River Center Mall at the corner of Commerce and Bowie Streets.

If you are not interested in seeing the Battle of the Alamo recreated, you can still go to the Imax theater. Wonderful nature and science movies are also shown there. Some are shown in 3-D.

Make sure you visit while you are downtown. Your whole family will enjoy this theater, no matter which movie you decide to see. The kids will love putting on 3-D glasses and learning about nature and other realistic happenings.

Santikos Palladium San Antonio

The newly built Santikos Palladium San Antonio is one of the nicest modern theaters in San Antonio. It is a beautiful and spacious theater, with comfy seats and lots of leg room.

There are several eateries and I was surprised to find a bar up on the second floor. Kids are not allowed up there so just stay downstairs. Personally, I don't think a bar is appropriate at a family theater.

This is the largest theater in San Antonio. It boasts 19 screens, including an IMAX theater. There is a Gelato Stand, a full service Restaurant and Bar. They also have exclusive VIP screening rooms.

This theater is very proud of their food.  Movie food is generally expensive, but the food here is even higher than usual. The mini pizzas they serve feed one and cost over $7 a piece, not including a drink. I would feed the family prior to going at a local eatery. Or buy some snacks prior to going and then leave and go to a family friendly place after the show.

Plan to pay full price to see a movie here. There is a matinee rate but it is still expensive if you have a large family. Matinee tickets cost $7 for adults and $6 for children for a regular movie. If it is a 3D movie, adults get in for $9 and kids for $7. After 6pm, regular movies are $9 for adults and $6 for kids. 3D features after 6pm are $11 for adults and $9.50 for kids. They also have discounts for seniors, age 55 and over and for those with military or student ID's.

Santikos Palladium San Antonio is located at 17703 IH 10 West at The Rim. Take the La Cantera exit. Their phone number is (210) 496-2221.

My family and I went there for a double feature on July 4, 2008. We had a great time, the seating and sound were fine, but it really was expensive.
