It would be unusual to find a fashion conscious woman who has never seen or heard of thigh high stockings.  They are a welcome change from panty hose, but you will find that there are differences in wearing thigh highs.  However, once you have become used to the experience, you will welcome it again. Some thigh highs stay up by themselves, no garters needed. Others do need the help of garters to stay on the leg properly.

Thigh highs have never really gone out of style, but with the advent of pantyhose in the 1960s, stockings of all descriptions became less popular. Skirts were shorter, and women preferred to wear a type of stocking that did not need garters in order to stay up. As a result, thigh highs became very hard to find for the average woman.

One merely had to check the photography featured in most men’s magazines during these years to discover that thigh highs were alive and well. Men appreciate stockings of every description, especially this variety. Have you ever seen a photo destined for a magazine of this type? You can bet the model was not wearing pantyhose! Thigh highs are prominently displayed on the models that grace the pages of these periodicals. They are considered as a type of lingerie, not merely a covering for the feet and legs.

Women do read these magazines, and noticed that the thigh highs along with garter belts were often featured. This led females around the world to look for both types of lingerie, but much to their dismay, these stockings and garters could be very difficult to find.  Pantyhose were everywhere, but there were no stockings that could be easily located, nor the garters needed to keep them in place! Thigh highs have recently made a comeback in the fashion world, along with garter belts, so those who have yearned for them now have no problem locating either of them.

There are two types of thigh highs that are popular today.  The first type is the basic stocking that requires garters to hold it up. Either a garter belt or leg garters are used for this. If you were to ask the average male, he would tell you that the garters add quite a bit to the erotic appeal of the thigh highs. Many women appreciate this knowledge, and use it to their advantage.

The second type of thigh high is newer and more innovative, as it needs no garters at all. This type of thigh high is commonly called a “stay up”. These stockings have bands of silicone material placed on the inside top. The band will grip your skin when your pull the stocking up to your thigh area, and this keeps the stocking smooth and wrinkle free.

Women who are fashion mavens have embraced this style, as it goes so well with their different outfits. Women of all ages are grateful for the ease with which these stockings go on and off; usually with very little adjustment needed during the period they are being worn. However, there are times when extra activity, or an individual’s leg size calls for the wearing of garters, mostly to insure that the stockings do not slip. Garters are also worn strictly for sex appeal.

Many women are using thigh high stockings and garters for the first time, and may need tips on how to best get into these garments. Garters can be attached either to a belt, or to a bustier or camisole. When you decide to wear one of these garments, you will want to get into it first when dressing, along with your stockings.

Any panties you decide to wear should go on over the garter belt. Some women do the exact opposite of this, but wearing the panties on top makes it a lot easier for you to manage a quick trip to the ladies room when you are out and about. This method can also come in quite handy in the bedroom. Men are ecstatic about thigh highs and panties worn in this way.

Leg or strap garters work beautifully, but will look their best when you are wearing a dress that has a bit of a full skirt. They have a tendency to show through straight skirts, and their bulkiness can be a distraction. Leg garters can be gorgeous, lacy objects that you would enjoy wearing for their beauty alone.
