A deck, a patio, a porch, a garden, or even just a simple plant box and a narrow pathway—all of these constitute what could be considered as outdoor spaces. Our outdoor areas serve as extensions of our indoor spaces. They are versatile spaces where we can conduct many different kinds of family activities such as entertaining guests, holding parties, exercising, and indulging in hobbies and creative passions. This is why we have to decorate our outdoor space in accordance to its functions. At the same time, outdoor spaces are great venues to showcase our decorating or landscaping skills, given that it is one area of your home that you can share with the public at all times of the day.

Certainly, a major part of decorating these outdoor spaces is choosing the right pieces of furniture, equipment, and accessories. They must be multi-functional and weatherproof, such as a plant holder that is also a piece of contemporary wall art made of resin or metal. Decorating outdoor spaces is not a complicated task, and in fact, it is something that most homeowners relish doing. If you wish to decorate yours, here are some tips to help you along the way:

Consider the activities usually done in that area

What do you use the outdoor space for? Is it large enough to hold a barbecue party? Is it a deck where you can read a book during your down time? Or is it a narrow plant box where you tend to your small collection of potted plants and herbs? Depending on your major activities, then you can identify the furniture and accessories that you need for that area. For example, if your outdoor space is meant for your gardening pleasure, then it must have a tool shed, or where there is a lack of space, a set of wall mounted racks and hooks for gardening implements.

Designate specific spaces in that area

Referring to the preceding section, knowing the functions of each area will help you to accomplish this second task. For example, if your outdoor space is a garden meant for holding barbecue parties on weekends, then it has to have a holding area for barbeque equipment and a proper seating space for guests. If it’s just for reading and relaxation, then it must have a comfortable deck chair with a cushion so that you can spend countless hours reading your favorite books.

Source out accent pieces that are made of weatherproof materials

Once major pieces of furniture are in place, it is time to decide on accessories. Of course, these should be made of weatherproof materials because they will be exposed to the elements for prolonged periods of time. Thus, choose decorative pieces and accessories that are made of iron or durable plastic. Typical examples include types of large wall decor such as wall grilles, sconces, wall-mounted racks, and the like.

Regardless of the size and function of your outdoor space, the key to effective decorating is to make it complement the rest of the house. At the same time, it should be well-equipped to serve the functions for which you typically use your outdoor space.
