Fun Things to Do in Baton Rouge

Updated on April 29, 2015

Tour the USS Kidd Battleship

Now if you are looking for fun things to do in Baton Rouge, Louisiana then you've come to the right place. I grew up in Baton Rouge and still live just about five miles outside the city limits so I know quite a bit about the things there are to see and do. You might explore downtown Baton Rouge and the Central Business District and many of the historic buildings and sites. You could go out to the LSU campus and see Tiger Stadium or the beautiful oak trees and beautiful buildings. You might take your kids out to the Greater Baton Rouge Zoo and check out the brand new tiger exhibit and many of the new other exhibits that have been built or are currently under construction. How about the popular Mall of Louisiana and the many shopping experiences it offers including a marvelous new area built up behind the mall that has really given the mall a boost in appeal withnew shops and restaurants.

The USS Kidd Tour Downtown

Among the many things to do in downtown Baton Rouge is to check out the USS Kidd battleship tour and the adjacent museum. I've been to this several times and it's very interesting. The picture above right is one I took a couple of years ago when my kids and I went to the Kidd to see what we could see. They had fun seeing all the things on the ship and our tour guide told of the stories about the ship including how a Kama Kazi Japanese plane crashed into the side of the Kidd. We even got to go below the deck to see the eating and sleeping quarters and my kids tried out the bunk beds too. It was a very educational outing experience and not very expensive either.

Fun at the Baton Rouge Zoo

Baton Rouge Zoo

Fun things to do in Baton Rouge could include a trip with the family to the Greater Baton Rouge Zoo. Our zoo is indeed a popular attraction for many people in and around the city of Baton Rouge. The zoo is also undergoing some renovations including a newly finished tiger exhibit called the Realm of the Tiger. It's cool in that you can walk through the exhibit and there are large glass window panes that you can see the tigers up so close. There is also a new elephant exhibit that is under construction. You might try a ride on the zoo train that goes around the entire complex, through a tunnel and also through some wooded areas. There also some very nice, air conditioned rest rooms scattered throughout the zoo. Younger children might enjoy the wonderful play area with a super safe padded rubber flooring type material in case they fall. It's very bouncy and a good safety feature. The petting zoo has some little goats and the kids like to pet them too. You can see my daughter doing that in the featured picture. The zoo in Baton Rouge is a great place to go and definitely a fun thing to do in Baton Rouge.

LSU Football

Growing up in Baton Rouge, you are always hearing about the LSU football, baseball, and even basketball teams. Yes, LSU sports in Baton Rouge is a big deal and a really fun thing to do in Baton Rouge. I am a season ticket holder for the LSU football team and it costs a lot of money to be one. I am lucky to have some really great seats that I've had since I was a little kid. I have fond memories of going to games with my own father when I was little before he passed away. There are tickets available usually for LSU football games to be purchased either from the LSU ticket office or just go out to the games and walk around and you can usually find tickets from someone that is selling their extras. Be wary of those guys that go to the game simply to buy the tickets low and sell them high to other fans to make a profit.. You can spot them fairly easily. If you want to get a better deal, you should try to spot and actual fan trying to sell their own. I can say that the pregame tailgating eating, drinking, visiting that goes with the LSU football games is also considered to be a big part of the attraction. Of course, to have a great team like we have at LSU also makes it all the more exciting.

LSU Baseball

The LSU baseball team has a brand new beautiful baseball stadium called Alex Box and it is truly one of the finest college baseball stadiums in the country. The popularity over the last twenty years of the baseball program has increased greatly due to the success that former LSU baseball coach and then later athletic director Skip Bertman guided the team to five NCAA championships at the College World Series and just last year the Tigers won their sixth title. Baseball tickets are not as expensive as the football tickets are and usually the crowds are not quite as big. It will be hard to get a ticket on a weekend night for a big SEC game but if you really want to get tickets they can be found. Pictures here at a baseball game is my son and I out in the bleacher seats at a game against Alabama this past season. This picture was taken by a lady sitting behind us and I actually e-mailed it to LSU during the game and they put it on the big screen out in left field between innings. Both me and my son thought that was really neat and we had a good time that night.

Four Wheeler ATV Riding

Another thing you might want to do if you live in the Baton Rouge area is recreational ATV four wheeler riding. I recently purchased some ATV's for my family and we have gone to a place called Tower Trax which is about an hour away from Baton Rouge in a place called Fluker, Louisiana. Tower Trax is a very large area of land and woods that has been converted into a huge ATV park. I was looking for something fun to do for my family apart from sports and dance which takes up the majority of our time. ATV riding has been something fun and new for us and we have really enjoyed it so far. If you have the finances to afford it, recreational four wheeler riding is a lot of fun.

Towne Center

Towne Center is a fairly new addition to the Baton Rouge shopping and dining scene. This place is an all in one type destination that has condominiums in it too. It is very nice and something that Baton Rouge has not seen before. It also has a movie theater. It's almost like Towne Center is a separate little magical city that people are living in. Recently, my kids and I met my brother and his wife and our mother over at La Madeleine to eat lunch. It was a fine lunch and a pleasant upscale type atmosphere. I had a sandwich and we all visited and had a good time together.

Just this past Saturday evening, my wife and I met some good friends at Towne Center at the California Pizza Kitchen restaurant. This is a very nice place in the middle of Towne Center. We enjoyed some good food and nice time visiting with our friends for a while. Then it was time to go catch a movie across the street at the theater. This was really convenient being able to just walk across the street instead of having to go to the trouble to get in the vehicle to drive to the theater. We saw the a good movie for grown ups and had a nice time all together in Towne Center.

Blue Bayou Water Park

Blue Bayou Water Park is a great fun thing to do in Baton Rouge. This water park is really huge and is extremely popular. We got a season pass for each of us at about $65 each for this summer. If you go to the park just a few times then it is worth it to get the pass. There are tons of water rides and slides all over this park. I also like the lazy river where you just float around on an inner tube and soak up some rays. Make no mistake about it, there are people everywhere at this water park and you are not allowed to bring in outside food. A money saving tip is to bring an ice chest and maybe some sandwiches in your car and then you can leave the park and go to your vehicle to eat lunch and go back into the park. If that's too much trouble then there are loads of concession stands that have all kinds of stuff like burgers and hot dogs and pizza.

When you get weary of riding all the water rides then later in the afternoon you can walk right next door to the adjacent Dixie Landing amusemant park. This is all part of the admission price. They have a little kiddie area with rides for just the little ones. There are big kid rides to like roller coasters, bumper cars, log rides and just about any other kind of ride that you can think of. If you are looking for fin things to do in Baton Rouge them Blue Bayou Water Park and Dixie Landing is loads of fun.
