Think About: Walking as an Exercise
56We are seeing people walking in the parks, gardens or on sea shores or around a hill side or near by peaceful area during early morning time as well as evening time. Few people prefer to walk around 9 pm also!
It is believed that this is one kind of awareness among the people about their health and fitness! There is nothing wrong about that. To walk normally is also good because of our vehicle orientation! Our living and life style is now becoming more and more relaxing (or lazy?) so there is a need to walk! At least to use our legs regularly to justify and to activate as part of our body!
But one has to think about twice when consider walking as an exercise! Beside all facts, walking itself is helpful to massage our inside abdominal muscle-areas and most of the all organs related! At the same time one has to think that if have not used vehicle, not have sitting job; and not even missing lunch and dinner time on daily basis, then walking normally will surely help. But if you are walking normally with all the irregularities, then it will not help much! If you have crossed 35 year and not connected with any sport and eating oily and spicy things then you must think that normal walking is not an exercise for you!
It means such persons must take walking as an exercise: What it means really when you applied on yourself?
Let us start to talk about that:
Now think, how is your normal standing position?
When walking, what is your moving legs' position?
Are you walking straight?
Well let me put things clearly here now:
- One must check by standing straight and seeing down to leg and find out that is s/he able to see the ankle area slightly or not? What part is visible? Only fingers of legs are visible? Or half part or visible? If the tummy covers your visibility then you must take walking as an exercise seriously! (See fig. 1)
- One has to forget his or her normal walking style and become little faster with making your steps long and quick.
- One must keep the soles straight while walking with an intention for exercise!
- If naturally your soles are crossed while walking then you must keep your walk little faster with stretching the sole in a straight position! (See fig. 2)
- Please note that this stretching should not be painful or harmful at all!
- Please keep your hands free. Let them move as you walk.
- Please be sure about your spine. It should be straight and head also should be up while walking!
- Walk faster but decide your pace considering day to day walk and there should not be feeling of tiredness while walking!
- You must avoid drinking water during your walking. It would be better that you drink 2 glass of water immediate after waking up. It will help to make your stomach and intestine smooth. At the same time fresh water will stimulate your blood circulation also!
- Walking as an exercise must follow with a discipline. If you can walk up to 2 kilo meter with at ease then do it. Exercise does not mean rush job! Don't walk more than that and slowly increase half kilo meter week after week!
- Please never allow yourself to sit any where during your walking exercise. It means no break in between!
- You must not allow yourself to sit immediate after walking. Keep yourself on standing position for 5 minutes with keeping your body active; like, just lift your leg and up. Do same with other leg. Move your hands freely but with a proper direction, right then left or up and down. This kind of activity will provide you're an overall impact of exercise.
- After sitting maintain a gap of 5 minutes before taking any kind of liquid; like, water, tea or even milk.
- As we all know that one take bath after at least 15 to 30 minutes of any kind of exercise!
These are not thumb rules. But take it as few guidelines to get proper benefit from walking as an exercise!

Thanks for your opinion, Solaeshingles!
I am agree with you that walking helps as I said in my hub also; but I also want to mention the exercise point of view, which may help more and provide more benefits too!
Thought provoking, although the English is a bit strange.
Thank you 2patricias! For commenting on this hub!
one great Indianyogi 'Sri Aurobindo' used to walk for a 8 hours a day in his room, and that was his meditation too! My point is one can be in habit of walking and gain wonderfull benifits of it knowingly or unknowingly. Like solarShingle I also try to 'work' on the jungle of thoughts during walk. After 2-3 miles walk I become completely relaxed. In my case, after diner walk also has helped me alot. So cheers to all walkers through out the world.

I believe, that walking is truly the best possible form of exercise, ever. So simple, so powerful and it makes me to feel so much better. It brings a lot of fresh air in my lungs and all over the body. It also sorts out all busy jungle of thoughts in my mind.
