In my previous life as a carpet cleaner, I shared something in common with carpet cleaners from all over North America. Every year about the second week of January our phones would stop working. Oh we would have a dial tone, but no one would be calling.

I was very active in an online community at the ICS bulletin board (as an aside, some of the best carpet cleaners in the world hang out here. If you need a carpet cleaner, they can help you out in finding one). And the majority of the posts were people complaining about how slow it had gotten. I really found the whining and complaining to be irritating. So I put up the following post. It has since become known as The Paul Douglas Action Plan. The original form is in italics. Below are suggestions you can use in your business now.

Alright here is a plan of action for everyone, that needs new clients now.

1. Put out 1000 of your most productive flyers every week per tech.Don't forget to send the recipient to your website.

2. Mail 100 sales letters to commercial prospects per week. Restaurants, lawyers, doctors. Whatever, your choice. But do it once a week.A targeted direct mail campaign is always a money maker. Whatever you do, don't use your phone book as a list broker. Identify your ideal client, and get a list to mail to.

3. Follow up the mailing 7-10 days with a phone call.Fortune is in the followup. Many list brokers can give you a phone number. People are busy, they put your letter down to get to it later. They forget until you call.

4. Contact other business owners. Swap customer lists. Contact 100 new prospects from each list every week. Send a sales letter first. Then follow up with a phone call.This is a JV. It is done all the time in the online world.

5. Offer these same business owners gift certificates to give away as premiums to their clients.Imagine if JV partners gave away your product as a premium or thank-you gift. You see this now with all the online giveaway events.

6. Give gift certificates away at every Real Estate Office in town for every realtor working in that office every week.

Who is you main source of referrals. Give them tools to refer even more business to you.

7. Contact 15 prior clients every day. Let them know you are still alive.There is no excuse for this is you have an auto-responder.

8. Contact 30 cold prospects every day, in the market area you want to work in.This can be done online easily with pay per click, and adding friends, or fans to your personal network on social networking sites.

9. When completing a job, go to the neighbor and knock on the door, introduce yourself. Give them a business card. Give them a flyer. Tell then you want to be their cleaner of choice as well and hope they will consider you when they need the work.

Tell a friend script on your thank-you page allows you to do the same thing.

10. Offer a cash reward or cleaning credit to anyone that gives you a referral now.Give your website visitor and clients an affiliate link for their referrals.

11. Offer a strong incentive to use your services now. It will be too late in April. A discount, a contest, whatever, be creative.Create a fire-sale and clean up all the stuff sitting on your hard drive.

12. Join a service club or your local chamber of commerce. Attend the meetings, do the service and volunteer work. Great networking opportunity.Aside from hubpages, there is thousands of social networking sites that you can get known at. Add to that all the forums you can contribute to and there should be no excuse for your not networking.

13. Whatever other great idea that might come to your head.Let`s see, traffic exhange`s, link exchange, blogging, webinars, conference calls, YouTube, and on and on. If it is on the net, someone somewhere has figured out a way for you to promote yourself with it.

Now here is the biggest key. Don't do one at a time. Don't just do the ones you like and ignore the rest. Do them all right now. Not tomorrow, not next week, NOW. This is the success law of taking massive action. It doesn't matter which success guru you subscribe to, they all tell you to take action. Massive action yields massive results. Don't think about it, DO IT NOW!

Now granted this post is designed with the carpet cleaner in mind. But l have also provided you with ways you can apply this to your business. What kind of massive action can you take to create massive results? Using this list as a guide, can you create an action plan of your own?

Hi Paul,

This is a great collection of tips and advice to get new clients. As you quite rightly point out, although you wrote it for one industry, it can be applied to pretty much any other business.

Offering "something for nothing" is always a great method to attract new customers - if you have to take a hit for a few dollars in order to make a thousand dollars from that same new prospect in the near future - well, that's a no-brainer to me!

My phone worked fine but since I wrote that many others have been fixed.
