A Hub About Sex (as a hobby or addiction)

This article is about sex.  Actually it's not, but my guess that the headline leading you to believe that this hub would be about sex made you click on it.  I know this.  Another hub I wrote had the word 'sex' in the title and the traffic has been astounding.  It is funny that other hubs I have written in and around the same time have received a pathetic fraction of the traffic the 'sex' hub received!  It is not a newsflash that people - men and women - are attracted to all thing sex, but it is still an interesting human instinct (?) to consider.

I get bored with articles about how often men think about sex versus women.  Or why men apparently think about it more than women.  But I do think it is interesting to note the lines (or gray areas) that exist between disinterest, something being a hobby, something being a healthy obsession, or something reaching addiction level - be it sex, drugs, alcohol, gambling, or something else.  You'll always hear that you addiction is a problem when it interferes with normal life functioning... i.e., you are late for or miss work because you were busy surfing dating Websites, looking for tail on Craig's List, or polishing off a twelve pack of Stroh's.  I wonder about this.

Like the functioning alcoholic, there are likely sex addicts who can take part in all types of sultry activity online yet keep a productive work and personal schedule.  If this is the case, does one's preoccupation with society's taboos present a problem?  I guess the next test is is this something that you are hiding from your significant other, other family members, or some other person who matters?  Here, though, comes a condundrum... a sort of gray area.

I wonder if she's really a sex addict?

Are We Entitled to Keep Some Stuff Secret?

Good question - do we have to share everything?

If your spouse would get pissed when he or she found out that you have a collection of leather underpants stuffed in the attic, maybe it is something you should share ahead of time. But if you simply like to stop for a whiskey on the rocks once a week after work when you say you are working an hour late, is it really that big of a deal?

I think the fact that we click on something simply because we see the word 'sex' in the title says something about us. Clearly, it says that many of us like articles about sex. That's cool. We tend to like anything about sex. I know I do. And we click on it. And we make sure that our wife isn't looking... not because she would mind that we want to sneak a peak at the local swinger scene or see Jen Anniston photoshopped on top of Demi Moore, but because we would be embarrassed maybe if she saw us? Or is it because we just want to have some that is our thang and nobody else's? I don't know... just riffing...

What kind of a society would it be if sex was simply something we talked about, surfed online about, and maybe even did out in the open with the same amount of discretion we use when we blow our nose? It would be a boring society I think. Sincerely... a really freaking boring society. Sort of like a society where marijuana or even harder drugs were legal. We don't think twice when we walk by someone drinking a beer or dragging on a cigarette. There's really nothing to it. It's the stuff shrouded in mystery or forbidden by law or frowned upon due to community standards that we hide and get all weird about. Walk by someone in the parking lot of an arena before a concert... if they are drinking a beer they usually offer you one or gesture cheers! If they are taking a hit from a bong, they get worried... they duck down as to not be seen. Woooo, oh no, I am doing something that I need to hide from you.

It's laughable really the way we set these societal standards. But, on the other hand, if we didn't have them the aura of sensitivity that surrounds things like nudity, sex, and smoking weed would be gone... and so would the fun of sneaking around to get your fix.

Oh I did not check this out because of the S word. Honestly. I know the writer well (you) so I came over. And yes, I agree with your insights on the matter. There's just something with that word. Or are just sexual animals by nature that even our thoughts are governed by our primal makeup? Good read, as usual. Thanks for sharing :D

Personally, I think it is unhealthy for sex and nudity to be so taboo. I understand the fun of mystery and the satisfaction of doing something "forbidden". However, the side effects of having sex and nudity be so taboo leads to a lot of shame, and repression, which leads to a whole slew of unhealthy behaviors. I think the negatives greatly outweigh the positives.

I really came looking for the S word and I was actually wondering if I am an addict or it's like a fun sport or hobby to me.
