This Hub Pages Thing I don't Get It.
87There are three things I tend to read on the answers section of hub pages. One of the most common is the " wrote a hub and, (insert reason or thing here) and then hub pages says it's too (insert reason here)"
Word Count:
What new hubbers tend to forget is this simple thing: A hub is not a blog, and it's going to be here for a long time. Sorry, but anything less than say about 200 words will be flagged as too short. Why? this is hub pages, it isn't a blog. You are writing articles on hub pages. For get all about fixing a hub up unless you can write enough to have about 250 words.
If you can't do that it's great for a blog, since many people who read blogs want short and sweet. hubs are a bit different, short capsules, and good content. This is improving your writing at its finest.
Rule of thumb: 250 is good to begin with, and the hub won't get flagged as to short, but don't go the opposite way and give an essay. Don't write more than say about 1,000 words, as people won't read that.
Don't Over Promote:
One of the main reason for this comment is that some hubs are all about a product that the particular hubber sells. That is what your profile is for. People do read your profiles. Try something new. Also, be advised don't over link your hubs between your other hubs. You can only link two of your own hubs or blogs or websites in any combination on each hub. Follow this rule.
I know that sometimes you need to promote something, but put it inside a larger hub which shows a comparison of another company. No going overly negative or positive is a big plus, I can rate it you know, and this is important, the Hub pages will voice their opinion. If there needs to be a link, make sure it's a good one. Also add links to other hubbers hubs, and outside your own comfort zone (Say for example the composition's website or blog.)
When in doubt about promotion don't do it.
Writing Great Content But Only a Couple of Hubs.. Not such a Great Idea:
Write great content. Write Good content, and of course, write great content. That is the basic idea of hubpages. The better the content the more people will comment the more people will read it. That's also the drawback if we've seen it once then we've seen it a dozen times. Then this person wonders why they aren't getting traffic or money or whatever.
Write hubs, write more hubs and learn from others. I'm not a master, but I know others who are much better than I am. I admit this. I know this, so why try to deny it? Try reading some of Duchess O'Blunts' work, you'll get my point. Or Scott Life's, these two people are great for this community.
Content is important, writing that has nothing to do with the title or the keywords of the hub you are writing will be flagged. Bear this in mind.
So, the three most important things: Word count, Proper Promotion, and of course good content.

I think one reason why so many people come to the site with a blog mentality is that HP is actively advertising itself in newspapers with the caption "If you can blog, you can make money" I think it's terribly misleading as well as the way they word it to sound like a job position with the company. I do agree with you though, many people need to realize what is going on with this site and maybe even take a minute to read some of the rules and regs too.
Good advice for hubbers..thank you Rebecca
Good, sound advice, but Scott does make a good point above why bloggers come to hubpages. Also can't poems be less than 200 words??
poems can be, but for all intents and purposes I'm don't mention peoms, mostly because the ones I've seen have a bit of an introduction to them, and some other bits to them, so it does go over 200 words.
Nicely done and well said!
As a published poet and writer I discovered recently through Rebecca that there can sometimes be storys within storys. I have writen many poems only to realise that the central section is the poem and the rest is bagage not required even though they are relevant to the story for the writer etc. I am in the process of writing 2 novels and have recently been recieving alot of sound advice from Rebecca. I may be published but I am wise enough to listen when she has told me to sometimes cut out the complete first chapter of a new book which at first I think is madness.
However after reading the story again as she suggested it opened me up to the fact there are hard rules in writing to have a structure and to get to the point.
I have to agree with her coments in regards to the hubs. Nice obserations Rebecca.

It's hard to be a wrier and sometimes, we need to cut our babies, but still, it is always worthwhile in working with people who know more than me....
When I first registered, I thought it was a blogging site as well. Perhaps it's really the only way, or the MAIN reason, why they promote as a site. And even when I started posting what I considered "blogs", I didn't think otherwise. I realize now that HubPages is the complete opposite, but I wanted to find a place where I could make money, blogging, and this is the site I chose. It's been two months and I still haven't made money, but what the hey. Oh well.
Thanks for the hub, however. Had I read it when I first got here, if it had been written when I first got here, I probably would have had a good idea.
I agree, some of the Hubs are more like blogs, I really enjoy reading a hub with good content. Thanks for the info.
Rebecca, another great hub. Good presentation and wonderfully straight to the point ideas. (and wow! thanks for the plug!)
You have listed some great resources. I need to take a look at those. Thank you for taking the time to put it out there for use.
Excellent & insightful. Gave me some pointers, which I think is one of the things I like best about HubPages. Picking up ideas & learning from others along the way.
Thanks for sharing this.
not a problem Duchess OBlunt. enjoy it.
This is so true ken, to get more insight is important.
Personally I suck at blogs and don't get traffic from then. I end up whining about something. This time of year I whine about nanowrimo. Figures, don't it. ;)
Great advice here. Quality over quantity. Some Blog writers like Perez Hilton get a million dollars a year from that darn Blog of his. Costs a thousand bucks to advertise on his Blog for less than a week. Gasps! I believe in quality, but I loooooove money! : )
These are really and truly helpful remarks. Thank you so much. I'm a newbie and keep messing up. But I keep trying.
The difference between a hub and a blog was an eye-opener for me.
INsightful. Newbie don't know its not a blog.
I'm new to HP, so i'm thankful I came around this. Very insightful. Appreciate the info!
Excellent advice here in this needful Hub. Thank you for giving to the Community so selflessly.
Nicely done, now I can breathe a gasp of relief! I'm new to all of this quick publish writing. But I enjoy it immensely. I still wonder about blog writing, but that's as far as it goes for me. Thanks for putting some perspective into it!
I hope this helps, as I've said you need to spend time, and have patience, and then magic begins to happen. It does take time.
thanks for the comment James, it's important to recallt eh basics once and a while.
