Who is Thomas Hearns
Thomas Hearns is an american welterweight champion. He was born on October 18, 1958 in Memphis, Tennessee. His technique of luring fighters by carrying a low left hand is called the "flicker jab".
Amateur Career
Though born in Tennessee, he would later move to Detroit, Michigan and establish his great amateur record of 155-8. He became the AAU light welterweight champion in 1977 after defeating Bobby Joe Young. Later this year he would also receive the National Golden Gloves championship for this same weight class.
Professional Career
Not soon after in 1977, Hearns would begin his career. His first championship would come after defeating Pipino Cuevas by way of knockout. He would win the WBA junior middleweight belt from Wilfred Benitez in 1982. He would win the the light middleweight championship in 1987. In 1991 he would win the light heavyweight belt.
Overall
Although Hearns had a remarkable carrer, his career would always be blemished with his defeats by rivals Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard. In total he would win seven world championship belts in six different weight classes. His record is a remarkable 61 wins, 5 losses, 1 draw, with 48 of his wins by way of knockout.
