Where the Thomas and Friends Characters come from.

Thomas and Friends come from the series of books called The Railway Stories. The first book was written in the UK, way back in 1945 by the Reverend W. Awdry. Since 1972 his son Christopher Awdry has been regularly adding to the series. Many Thomas and Friends books are still very popular but it has been the PBS kids TV shows that have been the biggest hit.

The main character, Thomas the Tank Engine was a wooden toy before he appeared as a fictional character. The Reverend W, Audrey made the toy for his son, Christopher, to play with. He created stories to go with the toy when his son had measles.

The railway engine characters live on the fictional Island of Sodor but many of the stories are based on real events. The Reverend Awdry was a railway enthusiast and delighted in making his true railway stories emotionally appealing to children as well as educational and thought provoking for tiny minds.

Now, there are over one hundred and fifty characters in the various books, TV series and movies. The core characters are known as ‘The Steam Team.”

‘The Fat Controller’ oversees the running of the railway on Sodor and is called Sir Topham Hat

I have made a comment on this topic two times (on other websites). The comment was that Ian McShane would make a perfect Devious Diesel for the Thomas film. But for some reason, no one has said anything about the movie since March. Why is that? ARE they making the movie or not? HIT needs to make updates about this stuff every now and then! But then again, the movie won't be coming out until 2010, AND it's only the middle of July 2009 (when I posted this), so it'll be some time before HIT Movies gets started. I apologize for getting mad.

A song they could use for the film is "So Insane" by Smash Mouth.

No need to apologise. The uncertainty is upsetting a lot of fans. And you are right about Ian McShane. A great villain.

I wonder who would make a good Thomas, though. And will it be live action, or animated? Those are the real questions Something interesting to see would be seeing REAL locomotives with animated faces, and not toys. But it's HIT"s movie, not mine.

What do you think Will?

I think wait and see. Although I like the idea of the animated faces.
