For some people, thrift stores are not an appealing place to shop. However, for those who are willing to invest some time and effort, amazing bargains await them.

Thrift stores are perfect for families with tight budgets. They are an excellent source for children's clothing since they outgrow them so quickly.

How to Shop a Thrift Store

Move past the notion that the item has been previously used.

Just because the item has been previously owned does not mean that it is poor quality. Some items at thrift stores are in excellent condition, sometimes mint condition with the brand tags still attached.

High quality, name-brand goods fill these stores. Making purchases at these establishments also provides support to your local community.

Stop into the store frequently if you are serious about finding bargains.

It is wise to stop in often since thrift stores usually have a high turnover of merchandise. The best time to find new merchandise is toward the beginning of the week after people have made their donations over the weekend.

Introduce yourself to staff members.

Learn their policies on setting out new merchandise, when and how often sales and markdowns occur in the store. Establishing yourself as a regular customer may offer the opportunity to have an inside track on specific items that you are looking to purchase.

Visit stores in the suburbs.

If you live in a large metropolitan area, take some time to visit thrift stores outside the city. You may find that stores outside the city limits offer more variety than those inside the city.

You must be patient.

Finding that perfect item may require sifting and sorting through piles of stuff at several stores. Do not be disappointed if you do not find what you are looking for, there is always next time.

Familiarize yourself with merchandise at each store.

Some stores may offer a better selection in clothing, the other might have a good selection of furniture. Be open to shopping at several stores since each may offer a better selection of what you are looking for in particular.

Take several friends with you.

Going with friends gives you that many more opportunities to find bargains. You can cover more of the store in a shorter amount of time, while you each can be on the lookout for particular items of interest.

My friends and family used to laugh at me for shopping in thrift stores until they saw the great stuff that I came out with. Now it seems that I can't get to my favorite stores fast enough. The shelves are bare when I show up.
