Thyroid Disease and Diet Pills

Many hypothyroid patients are asking about a thyroid diet pill. When facing such a frustrating situation, it is perfectly normal to look for help.

There is different kinds of diet pills, but most of them from natural sources will work by stimulating your metabolism. They will work a lot like caffeine : they boost and stress the metabolism to make you spend calories and help you burn more fat.

What Diet Pill can I take with a Thyroid Disorder ?

If you look on the bottle, some flu medication and pills will say something like not recommended if you have a thyroid disease . This recommendation is usually for hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is when you are producing too much hormones, so stimulating even more the metabolism could lead to complications.

But some hypothyroid patients can be very sensitive to these stimulants as well.  If your hart beats faster when you drink coffee for example, a diet pill may not be for you.

Do Diet Pills Affect Hypothyroid Treatments?

This is a complex question as all diet pills are different and only your doctor can confirm if a certain diet pill can interfere or not. But generally speaking, vitamins and supplements will not interfere with your thyroid medication if you take them many hours apart. The general rule is at least 2 hours apart.

As you already know if you are taking thyroid medication, the key is consistency. If you take your thyroid medication in the morning, you could take your diet pill in the after noon. But keep the same routine every day.

When you read about a a diet pill, you should always remember that they are tested on "healthy" people. Those diet pills are never tested on people with a thyroid disorder.
